The Estate
Domaine Faiveley — Seven Generations of Burgundian Excellence
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley stands as one of Burgundy’s most venerable and extensive family estates, now guided by seventh-generation winemaker Erwan Faiveley. With holdings spanning over 120 hectares across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, the domaine controls an extraordinary portfolio of premier cru and grand cru vineyards, making it one of the region’s largest quality-focused producers. The Faiveley family has long championed both traditional Burgundian methods and meticulous vineyard management, earning a reputation for wines of remarkable precision and longevity.
Under Erwan’s stewardship since 2005, the domaine has embraced sustainable viticulture and refined its cellar practices, reducing new oak usage to better express terroir. The Faiveleys’ deep holdings in Chambolle-Musigny — including parcels in Les Fuées, Les Charmes, and Les Amoureuses — showcase their mastery of this most elegantly perfumed village in the Côte de Nuits.
Terroir & Grapes
Les Fuées — The Aromatic Heart of Chambolle
Les Fuées is a premier cru climat situated on the mid-slope above Chambolle-Musigny village, immediately north of the famed grand cru Musigny. The vineyard’s limestone-rich soils with thin topsoil over Bathonian bedrock impart extraordinary aromatic intensity and silky texture to its Pinot Noir. This privileged location benefits from ideal eastern exposure and natural drainage, producing grapes of exceptional concentration while retaining the ethereal elegance for which Chambolle is renowned. Faiveley’s parcel comprises old vines cultivated with minimal intervention, hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve the site’s delicate expression.

Vinification & Ageing
Gentle Extraction, Judicious Oak
Following a rigorous sorting process, the grapes undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration to extract aromatic complexity before natural-yeast fermentation in temperature-controlled wooden vats. Erwan Faiveley favours gentle extraction through pigeage (punching down) rather than aggressive pumping-over, preserving the variety’s inherent finesse and avoiding harsh tannin extraction. The wine is aged for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, with a modest proportion of new wood (typically 30-35% for premier cru parcels) to support but not overwhelm the wine’s inherent terroir character.
This measured approach reflects the domaine’s contemporary philosophy: allowing each vineyard to speak clearly through the wine, with oak serving as a frame rather than a dominant voice.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Burgundian Triumph
The 2019 vintage is widely celebrated as one of Burgundy’s finest of the modern era, combining ideal growing conditions with exceptional fruit quality. A warm, dry summer with timely August rainfall allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness while preserving natural acidity, resulting in wines of remarkable balance and structure. In Chambolle-Musigny specifically, 2019 produced reds of extraordinary aromatic purity and silky texture, with concentrated fruit married to refined tannins and brilliant freshness. The vintage’s combination of ripeness and elegance is particularly well-suited to Les Fuées’ naturally perfumed character, creating wines with both immediate charm and long-term cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
Ethereal Perfume and Silken Grace
This Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées opens with an enchanting bouquet of crushed red berries, wild strawberries, and rose petals, layered with subtle notes of violet, white pepper, and forest floor. On the palate, the wine reveals Chambolle’s signature silky texture and graceful structure — medium-bodied yet remarkably concentrated, with fine-grained tannins that coat the mouth without weight. Bright red cherry and raspberry fruit intertwine with delicate spice, limestone minerality, and a whisper of oak-derived vanilla. The finish is long and refined, leaving a lingering impression of perfumed fruit and elegant freshness that epitomizes premier cru Chambolle at its finest.

This refined premier cru pairs beautifully with dishes that respect its delicate structure and aromatic complexity. Consider roasted guinea fowl with wild mushrooms, duck breast with cherry gastrique, or herb-crusted rack of lamb. Earthy preparations featuring morel or porcini mushrooms, truffle-enriched risotto, or aged Comté cheese also create harmonious matches. The wine’s silky tannins and bright acidity make it an ideal companion to Japanese cuisine as well — particularly grilled salmon, miso-glazed black cod, or tuna tataki with ponzu.
