Domaine Faiveley — Seven Generations of Burgundian Excellence
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley stands as one of Burgundy’s most distinguished family estates, now helmed by seventh-generation winemaker Erwan Faiveley. With 120 hectares of vines spanning the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, the domaine controls an extraordinary portfolio of premier and grand cru parcels, including prestigious holdings in Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Mazis-Chambertin, Corton, and Gevrey-Chambertin. The family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking has earned them recognition as one of Burgundy’s most reliable producers of terroir-driven wines.
The domaine’s Chambertin Clos de Bèze holdings represent some of their most treasured parcels, positioned within one of Burgundy’s nine grand cru climats in Gevrey-Chambertin. Under Erwan’s direction since 2005, Faiveley has refined their approach to emphasize precision, elegance, and the pure expression of each vineyard’s unique character, combining traditional Burgundian methods with modern understanding of viticulture and vinification.
Terroir & Grapes
Grand Cru Terroir at 270 Meters
Chambertin Clos de Bèze, one of Burgundy’s most storied grand cru vineyards, occupies a privileged mid-slope position in Gevrey-Chambertin, where the soil transitions from rocky limestone at the top to deeper, clay-rich marls lower down. Faiveley’s parcels benefit from excellent southeastern exposure and optimal drainage, producing Pinot Noir of exceptional concentration and aromatic complexity. The “Rodin” designation refers to the specific climat within Clos de Bèze, a small section of just over one hectare that yields wines of particular finesse and mineral precision.
The vines, planted to 100% Pinot Noir, are carefully tended using sustainable practices with yields restricted to grand cru levels, ensuring optimal ripeness and concentration while preserving the elegant, structured character that defines great Chambertin.

Vinification & Ageing
Precision and Restraint in the Cellar
Following meticulous hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting, the grapes undergo a cool pre-fermentation maceration to extract colour and aromatic complexity without harsh tannins. Fermentation takes place in traditional wooden vats with native yeasts, allowing the terroir’s voice to speak clearly through the wine. Gentle pump-overs and punch-downs ensure optimal extraction while preserving the wine’s natural elegance and structure.
The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 40-50% new oak to frame rather than dominate the wine’s inherent complexity. This judicious approach allows the grand cru fruit and mineral character to shine through, while subtle oak notes add layers of spice and texture. The wine is bottled unfined and lightly filtered to preserve maximum aromatics and mouthfeel.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Burgundian Triumph
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy is widely regarded as exceptional, combining the ripeness and generosity of a warm year with remarkable freshness and balance. A mild winter and warm, dry summer with strategic rainfall in August allowed the grapes to achieve optimal physiological ripeness while retaining bright acidity. For Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits, 2019 produced wines of extraordinary aromatic intensity, supple tannins, and impressive ageing potential.
In Chambertin Clos de Bèze, the vintage yielded wines of remarkable concentration and purity, with the classic grand cru structure beautifully balanced by silky textures and expressive fruit. Early critical reception suggests 2019 will rank among the great Burgundy vintages of the past two decades, offering both immediate charm and long-term cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
Aristocratic Power Meets Silken Grace
This Chambertin Clos de Bèze opens with a complex bouquet of crushed wild strawberries, black cherry, and rose petal, layered with notes of forest floor, sandalwood, and subtle exotic spice. The palate reveals the grand cru’s signature density and structure, with concentrated dark fruit and fine-grained tannins that coat the mouth yet remain remarkably refined. Vibrant acidity lifts the mid-palate, while mineral notes and hints of liquorice, tobacco, and blood orange add layers of complexity. The finish is long and precise, leaving impressions of red fruit, stone, and delicate floral notes that linger beautifully. This is a wine of exceptional breeding that perfectly balances power and elegance, requiring patience but promising magnificent evolution over the next two decades.

Grand cru Burgundy
This grand cru demands the finest pairings: roasted game birds such as wood pigeon or grouse, truffle-enriched dishes, Burgundian boeuf bourguignon, or perfectly aged Comté cheese. The wine’s structure and aromatic complexity also complement duck breast with cherry gastrique, venison with juniper and wild mushrooms, or simply prepared lamb with herbes de Provence. For the purist, this Chambertin Clos de Bèze can be savoured on its own, allowing its layers of terroir expression to unfold gradually in the glass.
