The Estate
Château Montrose 2019 — A De Facto First Growth
Château Montrose stands as one of Bordeaux’s most revered Second Growths, yet critics now regard it as a de facto First Growth. Founded in 1815 on a spectacular gravel plateau overlooking the Gironde estuary, this Saint-Estèphe estate earned its classification in 1855 and has never wavered in its pursuit of excellence. Moreover, the Château Montrose 2019 represents the pinnacle of this historic property’s modern era, combining traditional viticulture with meticulous precision.
The Bouygues family acquired the estate in 2006 and has invested significantly in both vineyard management and cellar infrastructure. Today, the 95-hectare vineyard produces wines of extraordinary concentration and longevity, consistently rivalling the Left Bank’s most celebrated names. Indeed, this lot of three magnums offers collectors an exceptional opportunity to secure multiple large-format bottles of one of Bordeaux’s greatest recent vintages.

Terroir & Grapes
The Montrose Plateau
The vineyard sits on a privileged terroir of deep Günzian gravel over a limestone and clay subsoil, offering exceptional drainage while retaining moisture during dry spells. Furthermore, the estate’s proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a crucial moderating influence, protecting the vines from extreme temperatures. The 2019 blend showcases classic Saint-Estèphe structure with a Cabernet Sauvignon backbone complemented by generous Merlot richness.

Vinification & Ageing
Precision & Patience
The winemaking team employs parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each terroir block to express its unique character. Indeed, the estate utilizes a combination of concrete, stainless steel, and oak vats to tailor extraction for each lot. Following fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barrels for approximately 18 months, with a judicious proportion of new wood preserving the fruit’s purity while adding structural complexity. Moreover, the cellar team conducts gentle racking and fining only when necessary, ensuring the wine’s natural balance remains intact.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Magnificent Year
The 2019 vintage ranks among the finest of the past decade in Bordeaux, combining exceptional ripeness with remarkable freshness. The growing season began with an unusually mild and dry winter, followed by a spring that spared Montrose from the devastating April frosts that afflicted other regions. Furthermore, the summer brought abundant sunshine and warmth, yet the estate’s proximity to the estuary maintained crucial freshness in the grapes. Consequently, the harvest yielded fruit of extraordinary concentration and perfect phenolic maturity, with thick skins and ripe tannins. Indeed, 2019 joins the legendary pantheon of “9” vintages in Bordeaux, offering both immediate appeal and decades of cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
Château Montrose 2019 — Power Meets Grace
The wine displays an inky, almost opaque purple-black core in the glass, promising extraordinary depth. On the nose, intense aromas of blackcurrant, crushed blackberry, and dark plum emerge alongside notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and violets. Moreover, a sun-kissed sweetness pervades the bouquet, suggesting perfect ripeness without overextraction. The palate delivers towering concentration yet remains brilliantly accessible, with succulent black cherry fruit, liquorice, and crushed stone minerality. Furthermore, the tannins possess remarkable refinement despite their impressive structure, coating the palate with velvety precision. The finish extends for over a minute, combining power with astonishing freshness and lift.
“Very clearly one of the wines of the vintage… its brilliance comes in its immediacy and accessibility.”

This powerful yet refined Saint-Estèphe demands substantial culinary partners that respect its structure. Serve alongside roasted côte de boeuf with bone marrow, braised lamb shoulder with herbs de Provence, or aged Comté cheese. Moreover, game preparations such as venison Wellington or roasted grouse provide excellent harmony with the wine’s earthy complexity and dark fruit concentration. The magnum format offers slower, more graceful evolution in bottle, making these large formats ideal for long-term cellaring. Indeed, allow the wine generous breathing time in a wide decanter before serving, particularly if opened within the next decade.
