The Estate
Château Montrose — The Gentle Giant of Saint-Estèphe
Perched on a gravel-rich plateau overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Montrose has earned its reputation as one of Bordeaux’s most esteemed Second Growths since the 1855 Classification. Founded in 1815 by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, the estate was named for the pink heather (bruyère rose) that once covered its slopes, and it quickly rose to prominence producing wines of extraordinary depth and longevity. Under the visionary stewardship of the Bouygues family since 2006, Montrose has reclaimed its position at the summit of Saint-Estèphe, crafting wines that seamlessly blend classical structure with modern precision.
The 95-hectare vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir of deep Günzian gravel over clay-limestone subsoils, producing wines of remarkable concentration and aromatic complexity. Montrose’s distinctive style marries power with refinement, yielding profoundly age-worthy clarets that reveal themselves gracefully over decades. This lot of three magnums represents an exceptional collector’s format, offering enhanced maturation potential and perfect provenance for cellaring or sharing at grand occasions.

Terroir & Grapes
Gravel Excellence on the Gironde
Montrose’s vineyards occupy a privileged plateau of deep Günzian gravel beds deposited during the Quaternary period, providing exceptional drainage and heat retention. This terroir, among the finest in Saint-Estèphe, imparts remarkable concentration and structure to the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon, while pockets of clay-rich soils bring flesh and aromatic generosity to the Merlot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a beneficial microclimate, moderating temperature extremes and extending the growing season for optimal phenolic ripeness.

Vinification & Ageing
Precision and Patience
Under technical director Nicolas Glumineau’s meticulous direction, Château Montrose employs a plot-by-plot approach to vinification, with each parcel harvested at optimal maturity and fermented separately in temperature-controlled wooden and concrete vats. The estate utilizes both gravity-flow and gentle pumping techniques to preserve the integrity of fruit character, while extended maceration extracts the full aromatic and structural potential from the noble Médoc varieties. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, preserving the wine’s mineral backbone and terroir expression.
The Grand Vin is aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, typically 60-65% new, sourced from selected coopers to complement rather than dominate the wine’s pure fruit profile. During élevage, the wine is racked quarterly and fined traditionally with egg whites before light filtration, ensuring both clarity and preservation of texture. The result is a wine of extraordinary balance, capable of graceful evolution over 30 to 50 years in optimal cellaring conditions.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Classical Médoc Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux’s Left Bank is celebrated for its classical balance and purity of expression, combining the structure and freshness reminiscent of great vintages like 2010 with the approachability of warmer years. A mild winter and spring, followed by significant heat in late June and July, was tempered by cooler nights and occasional rainfall that preserved precious acidity and aromatic precision. The September harvest unfolded under ideal conditions, allowing each variety to reach full phenolic maturity while maintaining vibrant freshness.
For Saint-Estèphe and particularly Montrose, 2019 yielded wines of exceptional concentration and structure without heaviness, with refined tannins and remarkable aromatic complexity. The estate’s gravelly terroir proved perfectly suited to the vintage conditions, producing Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary depth and Merlot of silky elegance. Critics have hailed 2019 as a benchmark vintage for Montrose, combining the estate’s signature power with an unusual degree of refinement and balance.
Tasting Notes
Power Meets Elegance
Château Montrose 2019 presents an opaque, near-black core with a youthful violet rim, signaling its impressive concentration and youth. The nose unfolds with aristocratic restraint, revealing layers of crème de cassis, blackberry compote, and crushed graphite, interwoven with notes of cedar, violets, and crushed stones. Subtle hints of dark chocolate, espresso, and kirsch emerge with aeration, alongside classic Saint-Estèphe minerality. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable density and structure, with a powerful yet refined tannic architecture supporting intense dark fruit flavors — blackcurrant, black cherry, and damson plum. The mid-palate reveals extraordinary depth and concentration, while vibrant acidity provides lift and freshness, carrying the wine toward a finish of immense length marked by graphite, dark spices, and a saline minerality. Despite its youth, the wine shows impeccable balance and harmony, with perfectly integrated oak and a seamless texture that promises decades of graceful evolution.
