Terroir & Grapes
Pomerol’s Clay-Gravel Tapestry
The vineyard rests on Pomerol’s characteristic terroir, where blue clay intermingles with gravel deposits left by ancient rivers. This unique geological composition provides both excellent drainage and water retention, creating ideal conditions for Merlot to achieve perfect phenolic ripeness while maintaining freshness. The clay-dominant subsoil imparts that signature Pomerol richness and velvety texture, while the gravel surface promotes aromatic complexity and structural elegance.
The estate’s old vines, meticulously cultivated with sustainable practices, produce naturally low yields that concentrate flavour and expression. Traditional Pomerol assemblage emphasizes Merlot’s sumptuous character, complemented by Cabernet Franc for aromatic lift and structure.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Pomerol Craftsmanship
Harvest at Château Guillot Clauzel is conducted entirely by hand, with meticulous parcel-by-parcel selection ensuring only perfectly ripe fruit enters the cellar. Vinification follows time-honoured methods: temperature-controlled fermentation in small concrete vats, gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity, and extended maceration to build structure without harshness. This careful, patient approach allows each parcel to express its individual character before final blending.
Élevage takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious proportion of new wood that supports rather than dominates the wine’s natural fruit expression. The 12 to 16 months of barrel ageing integrate tannins, add subtle complexity, and prepare the wine for graceful evolution in bottle. Regular racking and minimal intervention preserve the wine’s authentic terroir character.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Classic Bordeaux Vintage
The 2019 vintage on Bordeaux’s Right Bank delivered exceptional quality, combining ideal growing conditions with near-perfect harvest weather. A mild winter and spring encouraged healthy vine development, while a warm, dry summer with timely rainfall bursts maintained perfect balance between concentration and freshness. September’s glorious conditions allowed Merlot to achieve full phenolic maturity, producing wines of remarkable depth, purity, and elegant structure.
In Pomerol specifically, 2019 stands as a vintage of classical proportions — wines display the appellation’s signature opulence and silky texture while maintaining the energy and precision that ensure long-term ageing potential. The balanced acidity and ripe, polished tannins promise excellent evolution over the next two decades.
Tasting Notes
Refined Elegance in the Glass
Château Guillot Clauzel 2019 presents a deep ruby-garnet robe with brilliant clarity. The nose opens with enticing aromas of ripe black cherry, cassis, and plum, interwoven with notes of violet, graphite, and subtle baking spices. On the palate, the wine reveals Pomerol’s characteristic richness and velvety texture, with layers of dark berry fruit, cocoa, and earth unfolding across a medium to full-bodied frame. Fine-grained tannins provide structure without severity, while bright acidity maintains energy and balance through a long, savoury finish marked by touches of tobacco leaf and mineral complexity. This is a beautifully crafted Pomerol that combines immediate appeal with genuine ageing potential.

This elegant Pomerol shines alongside classic pairings: roasted beef tenderloin with truffle jus, duck breast with cherry reduction, or braised lamb shoulder with herbs de Provence. The wine’s silky texture and earthy complexity also complement mushroom-based dishes beautifully — try it with porcini risotto or beef Wellington. For cheese service, consider aged Comté, Époisses, or a selection of refined French charcuterie. The wine is drinking beautifully now with proper aeration, yet will reward patient cellaring through at least 2035, developing tertiary nuances of leather, forest floor, and aged tobacco.
