Pulpit Rock Brewing Company’s Momma’s Boy is a rare barrel-aged imperial stout cuvée from Decorah, Iowa — a painstaking blend of two separately aged imperial stouts, one slumbering for 45 months in a Wild Turkey bourbon barrel and the other resting 27 months in a Heaven Hill barrel, before the two are married and conditioned on locally sourced Black Walnuts. In the glass, it pours an impenetrable obsidian black with a fine mocha-toned head that lingers patiently at the rim. The nose is an intoxicating tapestry of aged bourbon oak, dark cocoa, espresso, toasted walnut, and a whisper of vanilla cream — the unmistakable signature of years spent in premium whiskey wood.

On the palate, Momma’s Boy is full-bodied and voluptuous, coating the tongue with waves of bittersweet dark chocolate, roasted malt, black walnut bitterness, caramel, and a deep dried-fruit sweetness drawn from extended barrel contact. The blending of two distinct barrel profiles adds remarkable complexity: notes of rye spice from the Wild Turkey component harmonize beautifully with the softer, honeyed warmth from Heaven Hill.
