The Estate

Domaine de la Mordorée — Southern Rhône Excellence

Founded in 1986 by Christophe Delorme, Domaine de la Mordorée has risen to become one of the most acclaimed estates in the Southern Rhône Valley. Starting with a modest 4-hectare parcel in Tavel, the Delorme family has expanded to nearly 60 hectares across some of the most prestigious terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac, and Tavel. The estate’s name, meaning “golden bite” in Provençal, refers to the intense mistral winds and golden-hued galets roulés (rounded stones) that define these legendary vineyards.

Today under the stewardship of Christophe and Fabrice Delorme, Mordorée crafts wines of remarkable concentration and finesse, consistently earning praise from international critics. Their approach combines traditional Rhône winemaking with meticulous vineyard management and rigorous selection, producing Châteauneuf-du-Papes that rank among the appellation’s finest expressions.

Terroir & Grapes

The Galets of Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Domaine de la Mordorée’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape holdings span multiple parcels across the appellation’s diverse terroirs, with significant plantings on the famed galets roulés — large, rounded quartzite stones deposited by ancient Rhône floods. These heat-retaining stones work in concert with the Mediterranean sun and fierce mistral winds to produce grapes of exceptional ripeness and concentration. The blend draws primarily from Grenache, the appellation’s noble varietal, complemented by Mourvèdre for structure and Syrah for aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Ageing

Traditional Methods, Modern Precision

Mordorée’s winemaking philosophy honors Châteauneuf-du-Pape tradition while embracing precision viticulture. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and on arrival at the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete tanks, allowing for gentle extraction of color and tannins while preserving the purity of fruit that defines the estate’s style.

The wine undergoes élevage in a combination of large oak foudres and smaller French oak barrels, with only a modest proportion of new wood to avoid overwhelming the wine’s inherent character. This extended maturation allows the various components to integrate fully, producing wines of remarkable harmony and aging potential.

Vintage Character

2015 — A Modern Classic

The 2015 vintage in the Southern Rhône stands as one of the finest of the decade, combining ideal growing conditions with textbook ripeness. A warm, dry summer with cooling mistral winds allowed grapes to achieve full phenolic maturity while retaining natural freshness and balance. The harvest was characterized by healthy, concentrated fruit with thick skins and robust tannins, producing wines of considerable power and depth. For Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2015 rivals the exceptional 2010 and 2007 vintages, offering wines with both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

Power Meets Elegance

This 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape reveals the signature Mordorée style: profound concentration married to remarkable finesse. The nose opens with an opulent bouquet of dark cherry, blackberry, and crushed raspberry, interwoven with notes of garrigue herbs — thyme, lavender, and wild rosemary. Subtle hints of black olive, cured meat, and cracked pepper add complexity. On the palate, the wine displays impressive density and structure, with velvety tannins supporting a core of ripe black fruit and Mediterranean spice. The finish is long and layered, with excellent balance between fruit richness and mineral freshness, suggesting this wine will evolve beautifully over the next 15-20 years.

This commanding Châteauneuf-du-Pape deserves equally bold cuisine. Pair it with braised lamb shoulder with herbes de Provence, daube Provençale, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, or a selection of aged sheep’s milk cheeses from the Pyrenees. The wine’s structure and concentration also complement grilled ribeye or côte de boeuf with rosemary and garlic. For a more refined pairing, consider duck confit with cherry gastrique or venison medallions with juniper and blackberry reduction.
