The Estate

Domaine Faiveley — Seven Generations of Burgundian Excellence

Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley represents one of Burgundy’s most venerable estates, spanning seven generations of the Faiveley family. Today the domaine controls over 120 hectares across the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise, including exceptional holdings in some of Burgundy’s most coveted Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. Under the direction of Erwan Faiveley since 2005, the estate has modernized while preserving traditional Burgundian savoir-faire, earning widespread acclaim for wines of remarkable consistency and terroir expression.

The domaine’s holdings in Échezeaux Grand Cru are particularly prized, with parcels in the esteemed “En Orveaux” climat on the southern edge of the appellation. This monopole-like holding benefits from Faiveley’s meticulous viticulture and restrained winemaking philosophy, producing Pinot Noirs of uncommon elegance and aromatic complexity that rank among the finest expressions of this historic vineyard.

Terroir & Grapes

The Noble Limestone of Échezeaux En Orveaux

Échezeaux Grand Cru lies between Clos de Vougeot and the legendary Romanée-Conti, spanning 37 hectares divided into eleven distinct lieux-dits. The “En Orveaux” climat occupies a privileged position on gently sloping terrain with brown limestone soils over Bathonian rock, offering excellent drainage and the mineral signature characteristic of Burgundy’s greatest terroirs. This southeast-facing exposure ensures optimal ripening while maintaining the natural acidity essential to age-worthy Pinot Noir.

Vinification & Ageing

Traditional Burgundian Élevage with Precision

Faiveley’s approach to Grand Cru vinification emphasizes gentle extraction and minimal intervention. Hand-harvested grapes undergo rigorous sorting before a brief cold maceration, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats. The domaine employs judicious punch-downs to extract color and tannins without over-extraction, preserving the delicate fruit character essential to fine Pinot Noir.

The wine is aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 40-50% new oak selected from premier coopers. This measured approach allows the Grand Cru terroir to shine while adding subtle notes of vanilla and spice. The wine is bottled unfined and with minimal filtration, preserving the wine’s natural complexity and aging potential.

Vintage Character

2019 — A Classical Burgundian Vintage

The 2019 vintage in Burgundy delivered wines of remarkable purity and classical structure, following a growing season marked by early budburst, late spring frost challenges, and a hot summer tempered by crucial rainfall in early September. Harvest conditions were near-ideal, with warm, dry weather allowing unhurried picking of perfectly ripe grapes with intact natural acidity. The resulting wines display exceptional balance, combining the generosity and ripeness of the vintage with the tension and precision characteristic of great Burgundy, promising excellent aging potential over two decades or more.

Tasting Notes

Ethereal Elegance with Depth

This Échezeaux En Orveaux presents a luminous ruby-garnet color in the glass, immediately revealing its Grand Cru pedigree through an extraordinarily complex aromatic profile. The nose opens with layers of crushed red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry, interwoven with notes of violet, peony, forest floor, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable silky texture and refinement, with precise red fruit flavors complemented by nuances of orange peel, tea leaf, and mineral graphite. The tannins are fine-grained and beautifully integrated, leading to a persistent, elegant finish that showcases both the vintage’s generosity and the terroir’s inherent distinction.
