Clos Saint Jean — Modern Excellence on Ancient Terroir
Brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel have transformed Clos Saint Jean into one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most exciting estates since taking the reins of their family property. Working alongside renowned consultant Philippe Cambie, they craft wines that balance traditional Southern Rhône power with modern precision and elegance. Indeed, Clos Saint Jean 2015 represents the estate at the peak of its powers, capturing a vintage widely regarded as exceptional.
Moreover, the Maurel brothers have continued to refine their approach with each passing vintage, earning consistent acclaim from critics while maintaining the authenticity and character that define great Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Their 44 hectares of vineyards represent some of the appellation’s finest terroir, particularly on the fabled plateau of La Crau.
Terroir & Grapes
The Legendary Galets of La Crau
The vineyards of Clos Saint Jean spread across 44 hectares planted predominantly on the stony terroir of La Crau, arguably the most prestigious sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These large, rounded quartzite stones—known as galets roulés—absorb heat during the day and release it at night, ensuring optimal ripening even in challenging vintages. Furthermore, the deep clay-limestone subsoil provides excellent drainage while retaining sufficient moisture to sustain the vines through the Rhône Valley’s hot, dry summers. This unique combination of surface stones and underlying clay creates wines of remarkable concentration and complexity.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Methods, Modern Precision
The Maurel brothers employ meticulous vineyard selection and careful hand-harvesting to ensure only the finest fruit reaches the cellar. Following traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape practices, they ferment each parcel separately in concrete vats, allowing the natural expression of different terroirs to shine through. Moreover, gentle extraction techniques preserve the silky tannin structure that distinguishes their wines from more heavy-handed interpretations.
The wine undergoes élevage primarily in large neutral oak foudres and concrete tanks, which maintain the purity of fruit while allowing gradual micro-oxygenation. This approach, refined in collaboration with Philippe Cambie, emphasizes elegance and balance rather than oak-driven power. Consequently, the resulting wine showcases the noble character of old-vine Grenache alongside the stony minerality imparted by La Crau’s unique terroir.
Vintage Character
2015 — The Best Since 2015
The 2015 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape stands as one of the finest of the decade, combining the opulent richness of 2009 with the structural elegance and energy of 2010. Indeed, critics have hailed it as the appellation’s greatest vintage since that legendary 2010 harvest. The growing season proved remarkably generous—not only in the exceptional quality of fruit but also, unusually for such a fine year, in quantity. Warm, dry conditions throughout summer ensured perfect ripeness while maintaining excellent natural acidity.
The wines display stunning depth of color, silky-smooth tannins, and remarkable balance between power and finesse. Moreover, the 2015s possess both immediate appeal and serious ageing potential, with critics predicting they will evolve gracefully for two decades or more. For Clos Saint Jean, already listed among the estate’s finest vintages, 2015 represents a pinnacle achievement—wines that are simultaneously generous and refined, structured yet approachable.
Tasting Notes
Elegance in a Powerful Frame
The wine presents a deep ruby color with brilliant purple reflections that speak to its youth and vitality. On the nose, wild red berry fruit mingles with ripe plums and a delicate spiciness characteristic of Southern Rhône Grenache. Additionally, subtle vanilla notes add complexity without dominating the pure fruit expression. The palate delivers impressive concentration balanced by remarkably fine, silky tannins that coat the mouth with elegance. Meanwhile, the mid-palate shows excellent depth, leading to a long, harmonious finish where fruit, spice, and minerality interweave seamlessly. This is classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape that honors tradition while displaying modern refinement.

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs magnificently with robust Provençal cuisine, particularly slow-braised lamb with herbes de Provence, wild boar daube, or grilled côte de bœuf with peppercorn sauce. Additionally, it complements rich game dishes such as venison with cherry reduction or duck confit beautifully. The wine’s silky tannins and generous fruit also make it an excellent match for aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Mimolette. While already drinking well, patience will be rewarded—the 2015 vintage possesses the structure and balance to evolve gracefully through 2040 and beyond.
