Château Pape Clément — A Bordeaux Legend Since 1252
Château Pape Clément holds the extraordinary distinction of being the oldest wine estate in Bordeaux, with documented viticultural history stretching back to 1252. Named after Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux who became Pope Clement V in 1305, the château has maintained its prestige through seven and a half centuries. Today, under the visionary stewardship of Bernard Magrez since 1985, Pape Clément has reclaimed its position among Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, earning Cru Classé status in the Pessac-Léognan appellation for both red and white wines.
The estate’s 60 hectares of vineyards lie on exceptional gravel terroir in Pessac, just southwest of Bordeaux city, where the tempering influence of the nearby Atlantic creates ideal conditions for both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This six-bottle case represents an opportunity for collectors to secure multiple bottles of one of Bordeaux’s most historically significant and critically acclaimed wines from an outstanding modern vintage.

Terroir et raisins
Deep Gravel Beds of Pessac-Léognan
Pape Clément’s vineyards rest on the iconic deep gravel beds that define the finest estates of Pessac-Léognan, ancient alluvial deposits from the Pyrenees and Massif Central that provide excellent drainage and heat retention. These Günzian gravel soils, among the oldest in the Graves region, create the perfect environment for slow, steady ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, while pockets of clay support the Merlot component with richness and suppleness.

Vinification et vieillissement
Précision et élégance dans la cave
At Pape Clément, winemaking combines traditional Bordelais methods with state-of-the-art technology, including optical sorting and precision fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel tanks. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its unique character, with gentle extraction techniques employed to capture the purity of fruit while building structure for long-term ageing.
The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel before spending approximately 18 months in French oak barriques, with a significant proportion of new wood carefully integrated to add complexity without overwhelming the terroir expression. This extended élevage in the château’s historic cellars allows the wine to develop its signature silky tannins and profound aromatic complexity.

Grand ballon bordeaux
This refined Pessac-Léognan pairs magnificently with classic French cuisine: roasted rack of lamb with herb crust, beef Wellington, duck confit, or aged Comté cheese. The wine’s elegant structure and smoky complexity also complement grilled côte de bœuf, wild mushroom risotto, and truffle-enriched dishes. While approachable now with proper aeration, this wine will develop extraordinary secondary and tertiary complexity over the next three decades in a properly maintained cellar.
