Tasting Profile
The Bruery Black Tuesday Grand Reserve (2021) pours a deep, nearly opaque brown-black with a faint tan crown that dissipates quickly — par for the course at 21.3% ABV, where carbonation yields to the sheer density of the liquid. Therefor the nose is layered and immediately arresting: rich bourbon oak, dark chocolate fudge, caramelised vanilla, dried dark fruits (figs, raisins, black cherry), and a distinctive apple brandy lift that sets this vintage apart from prior releases. Therefor on the palate, the mouthfeel is full, warming, and coating — viscous without being syrupy — with low to moderate carbonation lending a creamy texture.
Sweetness arrives first in the form of caramel and milk chocolate, followed by waves of bourbon-soaked fig. Also dark toffee, and roasted malt. Then the apple brandy tertiary barrel adds a vinous, tannin-edged brightness mid-palate, before the finish settles into a long, drying burn of oak char and dark fruit. Despite its extraordinary strength, the alcohol integrates with remarkable elegance. A slow sipper of exceptional depth and cellaring potential — additional ageing of two to three years will only continue to harmonise these complex layers. Food Pairing
The Bruery Black Tuesday Grand Reserve 2021 Imperial Stout pairs magnificently with a dark Venezuelan chocolate fondant, where its bourbon-soaked fig and apple brandy character mirrors the bittersweet cocoa. Therefor equally compelling alongside a well-aged Époisses or a bold blue cheese such as Gorgonzola Piccante. Then whose pungent, creamy richness is beautifully counterbalanced by the stout’s warming depth and dry, oaky finish.
