The Estate
Domaine de la Janasse — Excellence in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Founded in 1973 by Aimé Sabon, Domaine de la Janasse has ascended to become one of the benchmark estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, now masterfully managed by his children Christophe and Isabelle. The domaine cultivates 90 hectares across the southern Rhône, with prime parcels scattered throughout the appellation’s most prestigious terroirs. Their meticulous approach to viticulture — favouring low yields, organic farming principles, and minimal intervention — has earned them a place among the region’s elite producers.
The Vieilles Vignes cuvée represents the estate’s flagship expression, crafted from the oldest parcels with vines averaging 60 to 100 years of age. This lot of six magnums in original wooden case offers collectors an exceptional format for long-term cellaring of this acclaimed vintage.
Terroir & Grapes
Ancient Vines on Châteauneuf’s Noble Stones
The Vieilles Vignes is sourced from multiple parcels across Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s diverse terroirs, including the famed galets roulés — large quartzite pebbles that store daytime heat and radiate it back to the vines at night, ensuring optimal ripening. These ancient gobelet-trained vines, some exceeding a century in age, naturally restrict yields while producing extraordinarily concentrated fruit. The blend honours Châteauneuf’s tradition while emphasizing structure and longevity, drawing from the appellation’s thirteen permitted varieties with Grenache forming the backbone.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Methods, Modern Precision
Christophe Sabon vinifies each parcel separately, with hand-harvested grapes undergoing rigorous sorting before fermentation in traditional concrete tanks. The domaine employs a gentle extraction regime with regular pigeage and minimal pumping-over to preserve the fruit’s natural elegance while extracting fine tannins. Following alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 to 18 months in a combination of large foudres and smaller oak barrels, with only a modest proportion of new wood to maintain purity of expression. This careful élevage allows the wine’s inherent complexity to emerge while building structure for long-term ageing potential.
Vintage Character
2012 in the Southern Rhône — Classic Balance
The 2012 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is regarded as a classic year marked by freshness and elegant structure rather than power. A cool, wet spring delayed the growing season, followed by a warm, dry summer that allowed for gradual, even ripening. September brought ideal harvest conditions with warm days and cool nights, preserving acidity while achieving full phenolic maturity. The resulting wines display remarkable balance, with vibrant fruit, refined tannins, and natural freshness — qualities that promise excellent evolution over two decades or more.
Tasting Notes
Depth, Elegance, and Southern Rhône Soul
In the glass, this Vieilles Vignes reveals a deep ruby-garnet colour with hints of evolution at the rim. The nose is immediately captivating, offering layers of dark cherry, blackberry compote, and crushed garrigue herbs — thyme, lavender, and rosemary — alongside notes of black olive tapenade, leather, and sweet spice. The palate is beautifully structured yet supple, with fine-grained tannins supporting concentrated red and black fruit flavours interwoven with earthy complexity, smoked meat, and a mineral thread. The finish is long and savoury, with excellent persistence and a hallmark elegance that defines great Châteauneuf in a classical vintage.

This Vieilles Vignes pairs magnificently with slow-braised lamb shoulder with herbs de Provence, wild boar daube, or aged Comté and truffle-studded terrines. The wine’s savoury complexity also complements grilled beef côte de boeuf, roasted game birds, or earthy mushroom-based dishes. The magnum format is ideal for sharing at table, offering slower evolution and greater aromatic complexity than standard bottles.
