Tasting Profile

4.2Untappd

Poured from its corked and caged 750 ml bottle, the Gueuze Girardin 1882 Black Label (2022) settles in the glass as a hazy deep golden-amber, crowned by a lively pillowy white head that slowly retreats to a delicate ring, leaving scattered lacing on the glass. The nose is immediately expressive: ripe red apple and lemon zest lead the charge, backed by white grape skin, subtle hay, and a beautifully restrained barnyard funk that speaks to Brouwerij Girardin’s century-old spontaneous fermentation tradition. On the palate, the mouthfeel is silky and medium-bodied, with a gentle champagne-like effervescence lifting notes of tart citrus peel, oak, green apple, and mild acetic tang.

A touch of vanilla from oak contact adds roundness, while the bitterness remains characteristically low, typical of the gueuze style. The finish is dry, long, and subtly earthy, with a trailing minerality and leather funk. This 2022 vintage is an outstanding expression of traditional Belgian lambic blending — equally rewarding fresh or given additional years of cellar time to integrate and deepen. Food Pairing

The Girardin 1882 Black Label 2022 lambic gueuze is a natural companion to aged hard cheeses such as a cave-ripened Comté or Gruyère, where its acidity cuts through richness with precision. It also shines alongside a classic Flemish moules marinières, the citrus and funky barnyard notes echoing the briny sweetness of fresh mussels for a quintessentially Belgian pairing experience.
