Bott Frères 2022 — Seven Generations in Ribeauvillé
Founded in 1835, Bott Frères represents nearly two centuries of winegrowing tradition in the heart of Alsace. Indeed, this family estate has been passed down through seven generations, each committed to expressing the unique terroir of Ribeauvillé with authenticity and respect. Moreover, the domaine cultivates approximately 20 hectares of vines across some of the region’s most prestigious sites, including parcels in three Grands Crus: Kirchberg, Geisberg, and Osterberg.
The family’s dedication to sustainable viticulture reached a significant milestone in 2022, when Bott Frères achieved full organic certification. This commitment reflects a philosophy that has guided the estate for decades: allowing the vines to express themselves naturally while preserving the land for future generations. Additionally, the domaine’s focus on traditional Alsatian grape varieties—Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and others—showcases the remarkable diversity that makes this French region one of Europe’s most captivating white wine territories.
Terroir & Grapes
Alsatian Expression of Gewurztraminer
Gewurztraminer finds its most expressive home in Alsace, where the region’s unique continental climate and varied soils allow this aromatic grape to develop extraordinary complexity. The vines thrive in the rain-shadow of the Vosges Mountains, benefiting from warm, dry conditions that concentrate the grape’s distinctive spice and floral character. Furthermore, Ribeauvillé’s diverse geological tapestry—ranging from limestone to clay-marl—provides the mineral backbone that prevents Gewurztraminer from becoming overly opulent, instead encouraging balance and elegance alongside its natural exuberance.

Vinification & Ageing
Organic Precision and Traditional Methods
Bott Frères vinifies their Gewurztraminer using time-honoured Alsatian techniques that prioritize fruit purity and aromatic expression. The grapes undergo gentle pressing to extract the juice while preserving the delicate aromatics that define this variety. Subsequently, the wine undergoes a temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which maintains the fresh, exuberant character of the fruit while allowing the natural spice and floral notes to emerge with clarity.
Following fermentation, the wine rests on its fine lees for several months, adding textural depth without masking the varietal purity. This élevage period allows the wine to develop complexity while maintaining the vivid freshness that characterizes the estate’s approach. Moreover, the organic certification ensures that no synthetic treatments compromise the wine’s natural expression, resulting in a Gewurztraminer that speaks authentically of its terroir and vintage.
Vintage Character
The Brilliant 2022 Alsace Harvest
The 2022 vintage in Alsace emerged as an outstanding year, marked by intense warmth and prolonged sunshine from June through harvest. While the summer brought scorching heatwaves, intermittent storms prevented full-blown drought and kept the vines balanced. Indeed, the predominantly dry conditions proved beneficial for disease resistance, resulting in impeccably clean fruit with concentrated flavours. Light rains just before harvest refreshed the grapes, adding a welcome note of vibrancy to what was already shaping up as an excellent vintage.
Consequently, the 2022 harvest yielded wines of remarkable intensity and purity, with concentrated aromatic profiles balanced by fresh acidity. Top producers found the vintage extremely bright and focused despite—or perhaps because of—the challenging warm conditions. For Gewurztraminer, the combination of heat-driven concentration and pre-harvest freshening resulted in wines displaying both the variety’s characteristic exuberance and an unusual degree of elegance and precision.
Tasting Notes
Exotic Spice Meets Alpine Freshness
This Bott Frères 2022 Gewurztraminer opens with an intoxicating bouquet of rose petals, lychee, and exotic spices—the hallmarks of great Alsatian Gewurztraminer. On the palate, the wine delivers concentrated flavours of candied ginger, Turkish delight, and ripe white peach, all lifted by a surprising freshness that keeps the wine dancing rather than sitting heavy. Moreover, subtle mineral notes emerge mid-palate, providing structure and definition to the generous fruit. The finish lingers with elegant spice and a touch of honeyed richness, yet never loses its sense of balance and precision. Indeed, this is Gewurztraminer that showcases both the variety’s natural exuberance and the refinement that defines thoughtful winemaking.

At the Table
This Gewurztraminer proves remarkably versatile at table, pairing beautifully with Asian cuisines—particularly Thai curries, Vietnamese spring rolls, or Chinese five-spice dishes where its aromatic intensity matches the complex spicing. Additionally, the wine excels alongside Alsatian classics such as foie gras, Munster cheese, or tarte flambée. Moreover, it provides an elegant counterpoint to rich seafood preparations like lobster thermidor or seared scallops with ginger. For cheese service, consider pungent washed-rind varieties or aged Comté, where the wine’s spice and texture create harmonious contrasts. The wine’s balance between richness and freshness also makes it an excellent aperitif, especially when served slightly cooler to emphasize its refreshing qualities.
