The Estate
Château d’Yquem — The Pinnacle of Sauternes
Château d’Yquem stands alone at the summit of the Sauternes appellation, classified in 1855 as Premier Cru Supérieur — a distinction granted to no other property in Bordeaux. For over four centuries, this legendary estate has belonged to just two families, the Sauvage and Lur-Saluces dynasties, before joining LVMH in 1999 under the direction of Pierre Lurton. The château’s uncompromising pursuit of perfection is legendary: entire harvests have been declassified when conditions fell short of Yquem’s exacting standards, and production rarely exceeds one glass of wine per vine.
The estate’s 113 hectares of contiguous vineyards occupy the highest point of Sauternes, where morning mists from the Ciron river create ideal conditions for botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential to producing these sublime sweet wines. Each berry is hand-selected during multiple passes through the vineyard, often requiring six to eleven successive tries over several weeks. This extraordinary selectivity, combined with barrel fermentation and three years of élevage in new French oak, produces wines of unparalleled complexity, intensity, and longevity — liquid gold that can age gracefully for a century or more.
Terroir & Grapes
A Unique Microclimate for Noble Rot
Yquem’s vineyards benefit from an exceptional terroir comprising gravel and sand over a clay subsoil, providing optimal drainage while retaining sufficient moisture for the vines. The estate’s elevated position at the convergence of the Garonne and Ciron rivers creates the perfect microclimate for botrytis development: cool, humid autumn mornings give way to warm, dry afternoons, allowing the noble rot to concentrate sugars and aromatic compounds without spoiling the fruit. This natural phenomenon transforms ordinary grapes into extraordinary ones, their skins becoming porous and allowing water to evaporate while intensifying flavors to remarkable levels.

Vinification & Ageing
Extreme Selection, Gentle Transformation
The harvest at Yquem is a marvel of precision and patience, with pickers making multiple passes through the vineyard to select only berries at the perfect stage of noble rot. Yields are minuscule — rarely exceeding 9 hectoliters per hectare, compared to 25 hl/ha permitted in the appellation — resulting in fewer than 100,000 bottles in most vintages. Fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, where the wine’s natural sugars and concentrated must require careful temperature control to achieve the delicate balance between sweetness and acidity that defines great Sauternes.
Following fermentation, the wine undergoes an extended élevage of thirty-six months in 100% new oak, far longer than most producers in the region. This prolonged barrel ageing integrates the oak seamlessly while allowing the wine to develop extraordinary complexity and structure. Regular racking and tasting throughout this period ensures only the finest barrels are selected for the grand vin; in challenging years, the estate has famously declassified the entire production, releasing no Château d’Yquem at all.
Vintage Character
2015 — A Radiant, Classical Vintage
The 2015 vintage in Sauternes delivered ideal conditions for noble rot development, with a warm, dry summer followed by perfectly timed autumn humidity. At Yquem, the harvest extended from September 21st through November 6th, allowing meticulous selection of botrytised fruit over six successive tries. The resulting wine captures the vintage’s hallmark brilliance and precision, showing remarkable purity of fruit alongside the complex secondary aromas that define great Yquem. While 2015 may not have the power of legendary years like 2001 or 2009, it offers exceptional elegance and refinement, with the structure to evolve gracefully for half a century or more.
Tasting Notes
Luminous Gold, Infinite Complexity
The 2015 Yquem glows in the glass with a brilliant golden hue touched with amber highlights. The nose unfolds in mesmerizing layers: candied citrus peel and apricot preserve give way to exotic notes of saffron, ginger, and beeswax, all underpinned by subtle hints of crème brûlée and toasted almond. On the palate, the wine achieves that magical equilibrium between opulent sweetness and razor-sharp acidity that only Yquem can deliver. Flavors of orange marmalade, peach, and honey are perfectly balanced by vibrant freshness, while the texture is simultaneously rich and ethereal. The finish extends seemingly forever, leaving echoes of citrus zest, white flowers, and minerals that speak to the wine’s noble origins and extraordinary aging potential.
