Château Pichon Longueville Baron — A Pauillac Legend
Château Pichon Longueville Baron stands as one of Pauillac’s most distinguished Second Growths, classified in the legendary 1855 ranking. The estate’s history dates to the late 17th century, when Pierre de Rauzan assembled the original vineyard that would later be divided into two Pichon properties. Under AXA Millésimes’ stewardship since 1987, Pichon Baron has undergone a remarkable renaissance, with Christian Seely at the helm crafting wines of extraordinary power, precision, and elegance that rival the First Growths.
The château’s dramatic architecture—featuring its distinctive turrets reflected in an ornamental lake—mirrors the grandeur of its wines. The 73-hectare vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, producing muscular yet refined Pauillacs that exemplify the gravelly Left Bank style with remarkable aging potential.

Terroir & Grapes
The Gravels of Pauillac
Pichon Baron’s vineyard occupies one of the finest terroirs in Pauillac, situated on deep Günzian gravel beds that provide exceptional drainage and heat retention. These large pebbles, deposited during the Quaternary period, force the vines to root deeply while reflecting sunlight to aid ripening—ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines benefit from proximity to the Gironde estuary, which moderates temperatures and extends the growing season.
The grand vin is traditionally a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend, complemented by Merlot for roundness and small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for complexity and aromatic lift.

Vinification & Ageing
Precision Winemaking
Pichon Baron employs meticulous plot-by-plot vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with each parcel harvested and fermented separately to preserve terroir expression. Gentle extraction techniques and precise monitoring during maceration ensure optimal tannin structure while maintaining fruit purity. The estate’s investment in a state-of-the-art winery has enabled even greater precision in winemaking.
The grand vin is aged for 16 to 18 months in new French oak barrels, typically 75-80% new wood from carefully selected coopers. This extended élevage in barrel allows the wine to develop complexity and integrate its powerful structure, resulting in a Pauillac of remarkable depth and longevity.
Vintage Character
The Stellar 2019 Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux has earned universal acclaim as one of the finest of the modern era, combining ideal growing conditions with near-perfect harvest weather. A warm, dry summer with timely rainfall allowed for exceptional phenolic ripeness while maintaining freshness and balance. In Pauillac, the Cabernet Sauvignon achieved remarkable concentration and structural integrity.
For Pichon Baron, 2019 represents a triumph—a vintage that showcases the estate’s gravelly terroir at its most expressive, producing wines of extraordinary density, precision, and aging potential that recall the legendary vintages of the past.
Tasting Notes
Power Meets Precision
Château Pichon Baron 2019 reveals the quintessential Pauillac profile in its most majestic form. The wine displays a deep, almost opaque ruby-purple color, leading to an aromatic bouquet of concentrated blackcurrant, graphite, cedarwood, and subtle violets. On the palate, it unfolds with remarkable power and precision—layer upon layer of ripe black fruit, elegant tannins of exceptional quality, and a spine of minerality that drives the wine through its extraordinarily long finish. The oak integration is seamless, adding notes of vanilla and sweet spice without overwhelming the fruit.
