Château Hosanna — Pomerol’s Rare Jewel

Château Hosanna represents one of the most fascinating transformations in modern Pomerol. Born in 1999 when Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired part of the historic Château Certan-Giraud vineyard, this 4.5-hectare estate occupies a privileged position on Pomerol’s famed plateau, neighbouring the legendary Pétrus and Lafleur. The name “Hosanna” – meaning “save us” in Hebrew – reflects both reverence and ambition, as this property has swiftly earned recognition among Pomerol’s elite despite its relative youth.

Under the direction of the Moueix family and technical director Jean-Claude Berrouet (followed by his son Édouard), Hosanna has distinguished itself through meticulous vineyard management and selective harvesting. The estate benefits from decades of Moueix expertise in working Pomerol’s complex terroir, producing wines of exceptional concentration and finesse that honour the property’s remarkable position on the Right Bank’s most prized clay-gravel soils.

Terroir & Grapes

The Pomerol Plateau’s Blue Clay

Hosanna’s vineyard occupies a privileged parcel on Pomerol’s central plateau, where the renowned blue clay subsoil – the same géologie that defines Pétrus – imparts exceptional depth and power to Merlot. This dense clay layer retains moisture during dry periods while providing natural drainage through a surface of iron-rich gravel, creating ideal conditions for concentrated, age-worthy wines. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, respecting Pomerol’s traditional encépagement while allowing the terroir’s unique mineral character to express itself fully.

Vinification & Ageing

Moueix Precision and French Oak

Hosanna’s winemaking follows the exacting Moueix philosophy: hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness, berry-by-berry sorting, and gentle extraction in temperature-controlled concrete vats to preserve the fruit’s purity and the terroir’s mineral signature. Fermentation proceeds naturally with indigenous yeasts, allowing the wine’s personality to develop without intervention. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak that integrates seamlessly thanks to the must’s concentration and structure, adding complexity without masking the blue-clay terroir’s distinctive character.

Vintage Character

2019 — A Textbook Right Bank Vintage

The 2019 vintage in Pomerol proved exceptional, combining ideal summer warmth with crucial late-season rainfall that refreshed the vines before harvest. This allowed Merlot to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining natural acidity and freshness – a rare equilibrium that has produced wines of remarkable concentration and balance. The clay soils of Pomerol’s plateau performed brilliantly, regulating vine stress and producing fruit of extraordinary depth and complexity, making 2019 one of the finest recent vintages for the appellation’s top estates.

Tasting Notes

Concentration, Elegance, and Mineral Depth

Château Hosanna 2019 reveals a deep garnet-purple core with brilliant clarity. The bouquet unfolds gradually, offering layers of blackberry, cassis, and dark plum intertwined with violets, graphite, and subtle truffle notes characteristic of Pomerol’s clay terroir. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable concentration and density, with velvety tannins supporting a core of dark fruit, while vibrant acidity provides lift and precision. The mid-palate shows exceptional texture and mineral complexity, leading to a long, refined finish marked by notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and sweet spice – a wine that combines immediate pleasure with serious ageing potential.

This Pomerol pairs magnificently with rich, structured dishes that complement its depth and complexity: consider roasted duck breast with cherry gastrique, côte de bœuf with bone marrow and truffle jus, or wild mushroom risotto finished with aged Comté. The wine’s mineral backbone and fine tannins also make it an exceptional companion to game dishes – venison with juniper and blackcurrant, or roasted grouse with celeriac purée. For cheese, opt for aged selections such as Comté, Mimolette vieille, or a refined Époisses that won’t overwhelm the wine’s elegant structure.
