The Estate
Château La Mondotte — Saint-Émilion’s Modern Masterpiece
Château La Mondotte represents one of the most remarkable success stories in modern Bordeaux. Acquired by Stephan von Neipperg in 1971, this tiny 4.5-hectare jewel on the prestigious limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion remained relatively obscure until the mid-1990s, when the Count’s uncompromising viticultural philosophy and meticulous selection transformed it into one of the Right Bank’s most sought-after wines. The estate’s dramatic ascent culminated in its elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classé B status in the 2012 Saint-Émilion classification, a recognition of the extraordinary quality achieved through radically low yields and perfectionist winemaking.
The von Neipperg family’s approach at La Mondotte is nothing short of extreme: yields rarely exceed 25 hectolitres per hectare, green harvesting is severe, and only the most exceptional fruit makes it into the grand vin. The result is a wine of incredible concentration, richness, and complexity that rivals the greatest names of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. This lot of three magnums offers collectors an ideal format for cellaring this extraordinary 2019 vintage, providing both optimal ageing conditions and generous entertaining portions when the time comes to open these exceptional bottles.

Terroir & Grapes
Limestone Plateau Perfection
La Mondotte’s vineyard occupies a privileged position on Saint-Émilion’s prized limestone plateau, the same geological formation that gives birth to Château Pavie and other classified growths. The shallow topsoil over deep limestone bedrock provides natural drainage while forcing the vines to dig deep for nutrients, resulting in small berries with exceptional concentration. The Merlot-dominant blend is ideally suited to this terroir, with old vines averaging over 40 years of age contributing remarkable depth and complexity to the wine.

Vinification & Ageing
Meticulous Craftsmanship
The winemaking at La Mondotte reflects the estate’s perfectionist philosophy. Hand-harvested grapes undergo rigorous sorting on both vibrating and manual sorting tables before fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel tanks. Gentle extraction through pigeage and délestage preserves the purity of fruit while building structure, with maceration periods extending up to four weeks to capture maximum phenolic complexity.
The wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with 100% new oak from carefully selected coopers. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel, and the wine remains on fine lees with regular bâtonnage to build texture and integration. Bottling occurs without fining or filtration, preserving every nuance of this extraordinary terroir.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Magnificent Bordeaux Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux delivered exceptional quality across the Right Bank, combining the power and concentration of warm years with remarkable freshness and balance. A cool, wet spring delayed budbreak and flowering, followed by a hot, dry summer that perfectly ripened the Merlot while maintaining natural acidity. Timely September rains refreshed the vines before a warm, sunny harvest period allowed for optimal phenolic ripeness. For Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau sites like La Mondotte, 2019 produced wines of extraordinary depth, precision, and ageing potential—a vintage that critics are comparing favourably to the legendary 2009 and 2010.
Tasting Notes
Opulent Concentration, Sublime Elegance
La Mondotte 2019 opens with an intoxicating bouquet of blackberry compote, crushed violets, crème de cassis, and dark chocolate, layered with notes of graphite, toasted espresso, and exotic spice. On the palate, the wine reveals extraordinary concentration and density, with velvety tannins supporting waves of black fruit, liquorice, and mineral complexity. The limestone terroir expresses itself through a persistent chalky minerality that lifts the wine’s impressive power, while the finish extends seemingly without end, revealing nuances of truffle, cedar, and blackcurrant leaf. This is La Mondotte at its most complete—opulent yet precise, powerful yet perfectly balanced.
