The Baladin Xyauyù Kentucky Riserva 2016 pours a deep, opaque mahogany-brown with ruby undertones, presenting an almost still surface devoid of any head — an immediate signal that this is no ordinary beer, but something closer to a vinous digestif in a bottle. The nose is arrestingly complex: waves of caramelised dark fruit, dried prune, and molasses lead the way, underpinned by leathery tobacco, toasted oak, and a whisper of bourbon vanilla drawn from the Kentucky whiskey barrels in which this barleywine matured. On the palate, the mouthfeel is thick, oily, and luxuriantly uncarbonated — almost port-like in texture.
Sweetness is generous but never cloying, as rich notes of toffee, dark raisin, walnut, and dried fig unfurl across the tongue, balanced by an earthy, slightly tannic bitterness and faint bourbon warmth. The finish is long and contemplative, with lingering impressions of aged tobacco leaf, dark molasses, and subtle woody char. The 14% ABV dissolves seamlessly into the body, making this a deceptively approachable sipper of extraordinary depth. Best enjoyed slowly in a small tulip glass; this bottle rewards patient cellaring and is an exceptional candidate for long-term aging.

The Baladin Xyauyù Kentucky Riserva 2016 barleywine finds its ideal companion in a richly aged Parmigiano Reggiano or a wedge of Comté — the crystalline, nutty character of these hard cheeses echoing the beer’s walnut and toffee complexity beautifully. Equally compelling alongside a classic chocolate fondant with salted caramel, where the beer’s dark dried-fruit depth amplifies the dessert’s bittersweet intensity without overwhelming it.
