Château La Mission Haut-Brion — The Sacred Terroir of Pessac

Founded in 1533 by the Lazarist mission of Saint Vincent de Paul, Château La Mission Haut-Brion stands as one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates. Located directly across the road from its illustrious sibling Château Haut-Brion in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, La Mission has forged its own legendary reputation through centuries of unwavering commitment to quality. The estate’s wines consistently rival those of the Médoc’s First Growths, earning it the status of Cru Classé de Graves in 1959.

Under the stewardship of the Dillon family (owners of Haut-Brion) since 1983, La Mission has reached extraordinary heights of excellence. The estate’s 29 hectares of gravelly slopes produce wines of remarkable depth, structure, and longevity — powerful yet refined expressions of Pessac’s exceptional terroir that age magnificently over decades.

Terroir et raisins

Gunzian Gravel and Urban Terroir

La Mission Haut-Brion’s vineyard rests on one of Bordeaux’s finest gravel terroirs — deep beds of Günzian gravel stones deposited by the Garonne River millennia ago. This exceptional soil drains perfectly while retaining sufficient moisture, creating ideal conditions for slow, balanced ripening. The estate’s urban location on the edge of Bordeaux creates a distinctive microclimate, with slightly warmer temperatures that favor early ripening and consistent phenolic maturity.

Unlike its neighbor Haut-Brion’s Merlot dominance, La Mission traditionally favors Cabernet Sauvignon, giving the wines their signature structure and aging potential. The blend varies by vintage but typically showcases the muscular character of Cabernet alongside the velvety richness of Merlot and aromatic complexity from Cabernet Franc.

Vinification et vieillissement

Traditional Excellence with Modern Precision

La Mission Haut-Brion employs meticulous vinification practices that honor tradition while embracing precision. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with extended maceration periods to extract maximum depth and structure. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its distinct character before assemblage.

The wine is aged for 18 to 22 months in new French oak barriques, with the percentage of new oak carefully calibrated each vintage. This extended élevage integrates the wine’s powerful tannins, adds layers of complexity, and prepares it for decades of cellar evolution. Regular racking and minimal fining ensure clarity while preserving the wine’s natural richness and texture.

Caractère vintage

1996 — A Classic Bordeaux Vintage

The 1996 vintage is celebrated as one of Bordeaux’s greatest years of the 1990s, particularly for the Left Bank and Graves appellations. A warm, dry summer followed by ideal September weather allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness while preserving natural acidity. The result was wines of exceptional structure, concentration, and aging potential — classic, elegant Bordeaux built for the long haul.

For La Mission Haut-Brion, 1996 produced a wine of monumental stature — deeply colored, magnificently structured, with layers of dark fruit, mineral complexity, and refined tannins. Now nearly three decades old, this vintage has entered its prime drinking window while retaining decades of further evolution potential.

Notes de dégustation

Power Meets Elegance

La Mission Haut-Brion 1996 reveals a deep garnet core with brick-red evolution at the rim, signaling its mature elegance. The nose opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, tobacco leaf, and cedar, layered with hints of truffle, dried herbs, and smoky minerality. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable density and concentration — waves of dark berry fruit, earth, and sweet spice supported by firm yet silky tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is extraordinarily long and complex, with savory notes of leather, iron, and dark chocolate lingering beautifully. This is classic La Mission: powerful, structured, and profoundly expressive of its terroir.
