The Estate
Château Figeac — Excellence at the Gateway to Pomerol
Château Figeac stands as one of Saint-Émilion’s most historically significant estates, its origins tracing back to the ancient Gallo-Roman villa of Figeacus. For centuries, the property was among the largest on the Right Bank, and though subdivided over time—giving birth to neighbours including Cheval Blanc—Figeac retained the finest parcels of its legendary gravel terroir. In 2022, the estate achieved the pinnacle of recognition when it was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in the Saint-Émilion classification, joining the most elite quartet of Bordeaux.
Under the stewardship of the Manoncourt family since 1947, Figeac has distinguished itself through an atypical blend that favours Cabernet—rare in Merlot-dominated Saint-Émilion—reflecting the estate’s unique gravelly plateau that extends into Pomerol. This six-bottle case of the 2019 vintage offers collectors an exceptional opportunity to acquire a landmark release from a property now firmly established among Bordeaux’s greatest names.

Terroir & Grapes
Graves on the Plateau
Figeac’s 40 hectares occupy one of the Right Bank’s most privileged geological sites: deep Günzian gravel beds deposited millennia ago, identical to the soils that define neighbouring Pomerol and parts of the Médoc. This well-drained terroir of large quartz and flint pebbles over clay creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which together comprise two-thirds of the vineyard—an exceptional proportion for Saint-Émilion. The estate’s position at the western edge of the appellation, where the limestone plateau gives way to gravel, creates wines of remarkable aromatic complexity and structural elegance.
Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Precision
Figeac maintains a philosophy of minimal intervention, with meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel tanks. Each grape variety and plot is fermented separately to preserve individual expression before blending. The wine then matures for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 70% new oak, allowing the terroir’s mineral precision and the Cabernets’ aromatic complexity to develop fully without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance.
Vintage Character
2019: A Classic Bordeaux Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux delivered near-ideal growing conditions, combining a warm, dry summer with timely rainfall in September that allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness while preserving natural acidity. For Saint-Émilion’s Right Bank, the year produced wines of exceptional concentration and balance, with the Cabernet varieties achieving full aromatic maturity. At Figeac, the gravelly terroir proved particularly well-suited to the vintage’s warmth, yielding a wine of remarkable depth, precision, and classical structure—a vintage that recalls the estate’s greatest successes while offering excellent ageing potential over the next three decades.
Tasting Notes
Aromatic Complexity and Structural Grace
The 2019 Figeac opens with captivating aromatics of blackcurrant, violet, and graphite, layered with subtle notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone—the hallmark minerality of its gravel terroir. On the palate, the wine displays exceptional balance between concentrated dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and vibrant acidity that carries the flavour through a long, elegant finish. The high proportion of Cabernet varieties provides architectural structure and aromatic lift, while the Merlot component adds flesh and approachability. This is Figeac at its most refined: powerful yet graceful, complex yet precise, with the distinctive personality that sets it apart in Saint-Émilion.
Critics’ Scores
International Acclaim
The 2019 Château Figeac has earned outstanding recognition from the world’s leading wine critics. James Suckling awarded it 98 points, praising its “stunning depth and precision.” Wine Advocate rated it 96-98 points, noting “remarkable concentration and impeccable balance for long-term ageing.” Vinous assigned 96 points, describing it as “one of the vintage’s true highlights from Saint-Émilion.” These exceptional scores confirm the 2019 as among Figeac’s finest modern vintages, worthy of its newly elevated Premier Grand Cru Classé A status.
Service & Pairing
The Connoisseur’s Approach
Château Figeac’s aromatic complexity and refined structure make it an exceptional partner for classic haute cuisine. Pair with roasted rack of lamb with herb crust, grilled côte de boeuf with bone marrow, or wild game such as venison with juniper and red wine reduction. The wine’s mineral backbone and Cabernet-driven elegance also complement earthy dishes like truffle-enriched risotto or roasted duck breast with wild mushrooms. For cheese, consider aged Comté, Tomme de Savoie, or a selection of firm, nutty Alpine varieties that echo the wine’s savoury complexity.
