Château Angélus 2019 — Premier Grand Cru Classé Distinction

Château Angélus stands among the most celebrated estates of Saint-Émilion, moreover, the property has cultivated its prestigious reputation since the de Boüard de Laforest family acquired it in 1912. The estate achieved Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in 2012, thus joining an elite group of Bordeaux’s finest producers. However, in 2022, the château voluntarily withdrew from the official Saint-Émilion classification system while continuing to maintain its exceptional winemaking standards.

The property comprises 39 hectares on the south-facing slopes of Saint-Émilion, where the family pursues an uncompromising approach to viticulture. Indeed, the 2019 vintage was produced during the estate’s transition to organic farming, reflecting the de Boüard family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture. Consequently, Château Angélus continues to craft wines of extraordinary refinement and depth, earning recognition from collectors worldwide.

Terroir et raisins

The Hillside Vineyards of Saint-Émilion

The vineyard occupies an exceptional terroir on the Saint-Émilion hillside, where clay-limestone soils provide ideal conditions for both Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Moreover, the south-facing exposition ensures optimal ripeness while preserving the freshness that defines great Saint-Émilion wines. The 2019 harvest extended from September 18 through October 9, allowing the winemaking team to select fruit at peak phenolic maturity. Furthermore, the estate’s conversion to organic viticulture enhances the natural expression of this remarkable terroir.

Vinification et vieillissement

Precision Winemaking & Oak Maturation

The winemaking team employs meticulous parcel selection and separate vinification to capture the full potential of each terroir component. Moreover, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel tanks, allowing precise extraction of color, tannins, and aromatic compounds. The wine undergoes extended maceration to build structure while preserving the silky texture that defines the Angélus style.

Following alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barrels for approximately 18 to 24 months. The estate crafts its own barrels at the on-site cooperage, thus ensuring complete control over toast levels and grain selection. Indeed, this attention to élevage results in seamless oak integration, where the wood enhances rather than dominates the wine’s natural fruit expression.

Caractère vintage

2019 — A Modern Bordeaux Classic

The 2019 vintage ranks among the most consistent and exceptional years in 21st-century Bordeaux, moreover, quality proved remarkably reliable across all appellations. The growing season delivered ideal conditions: sufficient winter rainfall replenished water reserves, while a warm, dry summer ensured concentration without stress. Furthermore, the extended harvest period allowed producers to pick each parcel at optimal maturity. Consequently, the 2019 Bordeaux wines combine ripeness and concentration with remarkable freshness and acidity. For Château Angélus 2019, this translates to a wine of extraordinary refinement and balance, indeed positioning this vintage among the estate’s finest modern expressions alongside other legendary years.

Notes de dégustation

Refinement & Power in Harmony

This vintage reveals the essence of Angélus at its most refined, moreover, the wine displays extraordinary aromatic purity with layers of black fruit, wild cherry, and subtle violet notes. On the palate, the wine presents full-bodied richness yet remains remarkably light on its feet, furthermore showcasing super-fine tannins that coat the mouth with silky texture. The structure feels both tight and polished, while the intensity drives through the mid-palate with impressive energy. Additionally, the oak integration appears seamless, allowing the pure fruit expression to shine without any woody intrusion. The finish extends with elegance and precision, consequently revealing the wine’s exceptional aging potential.

“Absolutely brilliant, rich and driving in intensity, yet light on its feet — an extremely refined Angélus.”

Although drinking beautifully now with proper aeration, this wine will reward patient cellaring for two to three decades. Moreover, the 2019 vintage will continue to develop additional complexity and tertiary notes over time. Decant generously for at least two hours before service to allow the wine’s aromatic layers to fully express themselves. Furthermore, serve in large Bordeaux glasses that provide ample surface area for aeration. This refined Saint-Émilion pairs magnificently with roasted lamb, grilled côte de boeuf, or truffle-enhanced dishes. Additionally, consider serving alongside aged Comté or other nutty hard cheeses to complement the wine’s silky texture and concentrated fruit.
