Château Calon Ségur — The Heart of Saint-Estèphe
Château Calon Ségur stands as one of Saint-Estèphe’s most storied estates, its history stretching back to Gallo-Roman times when the site was already recognized for viticulture. The château takes its name from the Comte de Ségur, who in the 18th century famously declared “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon,” giving rise to the property’s distinctive heart-emblazoned label. Classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Calon Ségur has consistently punched above its classification weight, producing wines of exceptional depth and longevity.
Under the stewardship of the Suravegne family since 1894, and more recently with significant investment and the guidance of winemaker Vincent Millet, the estate has undergone a remarkable renaissance. The 55-hectare vineyard benefits from Saint-Estèphe’s coolest terroir, producing wines of remarkable structure, precision, and aromatic complexity that have garnered international acclaim in recent vintages.

Terroir et raisins
Clay-Limestone on the Northern Edge of the Médoc
Calon Ségur’s vineyard occupies one of the Médoc’s most distinctive terroirs, planted on a dramatic hilltop of clay-limestone soils with an iron-rich subsoil known locally as “crasse de fer.” This unique geological composition, combined with the estate’s position as the northernmost classified growth of the Médoc, imparts remarkable freshness and mineral precision to the wines. The classic Saint-Estèphe blend is anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in the cooler microclimate, supported by Merlot that adds flesh and approachability to the wine’s aristocratic structure.

Vinification et vieillissement
Precision Winemaking with Modern Refinement
Following extensive renovations completed in recent years, Calon Ségur now benefits from a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery with temperature-controlled wooden vats that allow for precise parcel-by-parcel vinification. Each plot is harvested and fermented separately to preserve the estate’s remarkable terroir diversity, with gentle extractions designed to capture purity of fruit while building structure through extended maceration periods. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel to integrate oak seamlessly from the outset.
Élevage unfolds over 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 50-60% new oak depending on the vintage character. The cellar regime emphasizes balance and elegance rather than power, with careful racking and minimal intervention allowing the wine’s natural complexity to emerge. The result is a Calon Ségur that honors tradition while expressing a modern finesse that has captivated critics and collectors alike.
Caractère vintage
2019 — A Year of Classical Bordeaux Excellence
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux represents a triumphant return to classical winemaking after the opulent heat of 2018. The growing season delivered ideal conditions with a warm, dry spring promoting even flowering, followed by moderate summer temperatures that preserved freshness and acidity. September rains briefly raised concerns but were followed by perfect harvest weather, allowing patient estates like Calon Ségur to pick at optimal phenolic ripeness. For Saint-Estèphe, 2019 showcases the appellation’s signature characteristics: firm but refined tannins, vibrant acidity, gorgeous aromatics, and exceptional balance that promises decades of graceful evolution. This is a vintage that captures Calon Ségur at the height of its renaissance, combining power with poise.
Notes de dégustation
Aristocratic Intensity Meets Mineral Precision
The 2019 Calon Ségur opens with captivating aromatics of blackcurrant, blackberry, and crushed violets, interwoven with nuances of graphite, cedar, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine reveals extraordinary depth and concentration, its dark fruit core framed by fine-grained tannins of remarkable refinement. What distinguishes this vintage is its sense of lift and energy—there’s a mineral tension running through the wine’s core that brings vibrancy to the concentrated fruit, while layers of tobacco, dark chocolate, and iron emerge on the lingering finish. This is Calon Ségur at its most sophisticated: powerful yet graceful, structured yet seductive, with the balance and complexity to reward patient cellaring for decades to come.
