Yoichi — Japan’s Peated Pioneer on the Ishikari Coast
Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — widely regarded as the father of Japanese whisky — Yoichi Distillery sits on the rugged northern coast of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Taketsuru, having apprenticed at Scottish distilleries in the 1920s, chose the location for its cool maritime climate and clean water supply from underground streams fed by melting snowpack. Yoichi remains Nikka’s flagship malt distillery, famous for direct coal-fired pot stills (increasingly rare in modern distilling) that impart a distinctive heavy, oily character to the spirit.
Unlike many Japanese single malts that emphasize delicacy, Yoichi is known for robust, peated expressions with pronounced salinity and complexity. The coastal aging environment — with salty sea air and significant temperature variation between Hokkaido’s harsh winters and humid summers — produces whiskies of considerable depth. The 15-year-old expression, now discontinued as an official age-statement release, has become increasingly scarce on the international market since Nikka restructured its core range in the mid-2010s to focus on non-age-statement bottlings.

A Discontinued Age-Statement Pillar of the Nikka Range
The Yoichi 15 Years Old represented the middle tier of Nikka’s age-statement single malts before the expression was discontinued to preserve mature stock for blending and limited releases. This bottling brings together a selection of Yoichi’s peated and lightly peated malt whiskies aged for a minimum of fifteen years in a combination of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, chosen to balance the distillery’s characteristically bold maritime peat with layers of fruit, spice, and oak maturity. The coastal maturation environment and extended aging period develop considerable complexity — saline minerality interplays with dried fruit sweetness and gentle wood tannins.

Verkostungsprofil
Nase
Opens with soft maritime peat smoke interwoven with dark chocolate, dried apricot, and hints of iodine and sea spray. After several minutes of aeration, richer notes of stewed plums, leather, and a trace of coal tar emerge, alongside subtle vanilla and toasted oak from the cask influence.
Gaumen
Full-bodied and oily in texture, with a balanced interplay of sweet and savory elements. The peat is more integrated here — earthy rather than medicinal — accompanied by dried figs, dark toffee, black pepper, and a briny minerality characteristic of coastal aging. A thread of citrus zest and cinnamon spice adds brightness to the mid-palate.
Oberfläche
Long and warming, with fading peat smoke, dark chocolate, and gentle oak tannins. A lingering salinity and faint note of toasted barley remain on the palate, underscoring the whisky’s coastal provenance and extended maturation.
Provenienz und Authentifizierung
Wines & Spirits SA sources all Japanese single malts directly from a network of more than fifty certified suppliers, prioritizing traceable provenance and verifiable authenticity. This Yoichi 15 is stored in our climate-controlled cellar maintained at 14°C and 70% relative humidity, monitored continuously to preserve the whisky’s integrity. Each bottle at this price level undergoes a secondary authentication review before release. For discontinued expressions such as this, documentation of import chain and storage conditions becomes particularly important to collectors — we guarantee the authenticity and proper storage history of every bottle we sell.
Sammler Kontext
A Transitional Release from the Pre-NAS Era
The Yoichi 15 Years Old occupies an increasingly valuable position in the market as one of the last broadly distributed age-statement bottlings before Nikka shifted strategy in response to whisky stock shortages. Following the discontinuation of the 10, 12, 15, and 20-year expressions, Nikka consolidated the core range around non-age-statement releases such as Yoichi Single Malt and limited annual editions. Auction results for sealed bottles of the Yoichi 15 have shown consistent appreciation since 2015, reflecting both scarcity and the broader collector interest in discontinued Japanese age-statement whiskies. For those seeking a robust, peated Japanese single malt with proven maturity and a finite production window, this expression represents a tangible historical marker in Nikka’s evolution and Japan’s whisky boom.

Best savored neat in a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the aromatic complexity, allowing at least eight to ten minutes for the spirit to open after pouring. The Yoichi 15’s balance of peat, fruit, and coastal salinity makes it an excellent companion to contemplative evening tastings or paired with dark chocolate, smoked almonds, or aged Comté cheese. A few drops of spring water can be added to explore secondary layers of sweetness and spice, though the whisky is remarkably approachable at its bottling strength.
