Furthermore, he fell in love with and married Rita Cowan, a Scottish woman who would become his lifelong partner and supporter. Upon returning to Japan, Taketsuru dedicated his life to establishing world-class whisky production. Consequently, he founded the rugged, coastal Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido and later the elegant Miyagikyo distillery in Sendai’s highland region. Therefore, Nikka chose to honour his legacy by naming their flagship pure malt range after this pioneering master blender.
