Die Destillerie
Yamazaki - Japans erste Malt-Whisky-Destillerie
Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii at the confluence of three rivers southwest of Kyoto, Yamazaki holds the distinction of being Japan’s oldest malt whisky distillery. The location was chosen for its pure mountain water filtered through the region’s limestone bedrock and a microclimate of humid fog ideal for maturation. Suntory’s flagship distillery pioneered the application of Japanese craftsmanship to whisky-making, blending Scottish technique with indigenous materials — most notably Mizunara oak, a native Japanese species prized for its spicy, incense-like influence on aged spirit.
Yamazaki has become synonymous with the international ascent of Japanese whisky. The distillery’s aged single malts began sweeping global awards in the 2000s, establishing Japan as a peer to Scotland in the eyes of collectors. Today, Yamazaki’s older age-statement releases — particularly the 18 and 25 Year Old expressions — are benchmarks of the category, demonstrating the distillery’s mastery of long maturation in a humid subtropical climate.

Eighteen Years in Mizunara and Spanish Oak
The Yamazaki 18 Year Old represents Suntory’s most internationally acclaimed core expression — a vatting of malt whiskies matured for a minimum of eighteen years in a combination of American oak, European sherry casks, and the signature Mizunara oak. First released in the 1990s, this bottling achieved global recognition when it was named “Best Whisky in the World” by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2015, a milestone that accelerated its transition from connoisseur favourite to collector prize. The interplay of extended humid maturation and the spicy, sandalwood character of Mizunara defines the house style at this age.
Verkostungsprofil
Complex and multilayered, opening with dried fruit — figs, dates, raisins — layered with dark chocolate and toasted coconut. Beneath this richness, the signature Mizunara influence emerges: sandalwood incense, oriental spice, and a delicate floral note reminiscent of jasmine. A whisper of blackcurrant and old leather adds depth.
Full-bodied and silky, with a core of dried orchard fruit (apricot, peach) balanced by sherry-cask richness — caramelised orange peel, Manuka honey, ginger cake. Mid-palate, the Mizunara asserts itself with cinnamon, clove, and resinous oak, creating a layered interplay between sweetness and spice. The texture is viscous yet refined, with no trace of ethanol heat despite the spirit’s concentration.
Long and contemplative, fading through waves of candied citrus, espresso, and lingering oak tannin. The Mizunara spice — sandalwood and incense — persists well after the glass is empty, leaving a warm, meditative impression characteristic of extended maturation in Japanese oak.

Sammler Kontext
The Global Benchmark for Japanese Whisky
When the 2013 release of Yamazaki 18 Year Old received a 97.5-point score and “World Whisky of the Year” designation from Jim Murray in 2015, it catalysed a fundamental shift in global perception of Japanese whisky. Auction prices surged; what had traded at CHF 250-350 in 2014 commanded CHF 700+ by 2016. Suntory responded to surging demand by briefly suspending export allocations, rendering certain vintages particularly scarce in European markets. Today, the expression remains in production but under strict global allocation, with Switzerland receiving limited annual stock. The 18 Year Old has become a gateway piece for collectors entering the Japanese whisky category — a liquid demonstration of why Japanese single malt now commands prices comparable to aged Islay and Speyside benchmarks. Mizunara-matured components in this vatting are particularly prized, as the oak’s scarcity and difficulty to work with (it leaks easily during cooperage) make extended Mizunara maturation increasingly rare in new releases.
Service & Vergnügen
The Yamazaki 18 demands patience and contemplation — pour neat in a tulip-shaped glass and allow fifteen minutes for the aromatics to fully open before nosing. This is an evening whisky, best savoured slowly after dinner or alongside dark chocolate with a high cacao percentage (75%+), which complements the sherry-cask richness without overwhelming the delicate Mizunara spice. A few drops of spring water can be added to unlock additional complexity, though most collectors prefer it undiluted to experience the full viscosity and oak character. Reserve this bottle for significant occasions; its reputation and price point make it a ceremonial dram rather than a casual pour.
