Karuizawa Whisky
Karuizawa — The World’s Most Legendary Silent Distillery
Karuizawa whisky is the most sought-after Japanese single malt in the world. Indeed, the distillery was founded in 1955 at the foot of Mount Asama — an active volcano in Nagano Prefecture. It operated on a remarkably small scale. Furthermore, it used 100% Golden Promise barley and sherry casks imported from Spain. As a result, it produced spirit of extraordinary depth before closing permanently in 2000.
Today, every remaining Karuizawa bottling is a finite artefact. Consequently, prices at auction continue to rise year after year. In fact, no other Japanese whisky commands comparable collector interest.
The History of Karuizawa Single Malt
Karuizawa distillery sat in a cool mountain resort town — the favourite summer escape of Tokyo’s elite. In particular, the cool alpine climate, pure mountain water, and small copper pot stills produced a spirit of unusual concentration and complexity.
Number One Drinks Company rescued the remaining stocks in 2011. Subsequently, they bottled them progressively as single-cask expressions, each carrying its unique cask number. Moreover, the sherry cask influence — rich, complex, and deeply satisfying — has never been replicated by any other Japanese distillery. As a result, each bottle represents a truly unrepeatable moment in whisky history.
The Most Collectible Releases
Among the most celebrated series and individual casks:
- Noh-Serie — iconic label design featuring traditional Japanese theatre masks
- Geisha-Serie — among the most visually distinctive Karuizawa releases
- Individual casks — #5627, #8775, #8383, #152 — each a unique expression
- Vintage releases — expressions from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s
These bottles now command auction prices that place Karuizawa among the world’s most valuable whiskies. Nevertheless, authenticated bottles remain available through specialist retailers for serious collectors. However, supply is finite and decreasing every year.
Where to Buy Karuizawa Whisky
Finding authentic Karuizawa whisky is extremely difficult. In addition, the market unfortunately attracts counterfeiters. Therefore, provenance and authentication are essential before any purchase.
We personally source and authenticate every bottle in our Karuizawa collection. Moreover, we verify provenance and store every bottle in climate-controlled conditions from cellar to dispatch. Furthermore, we ship worldwide — to Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, and beyond.
In conclusion, for serious collectors and long-term investors seeking the finest expressions of this extinct distillery, Wines & Spirits SA is Switzerland’s specialist source for rare Karuizawa whisky.
