Tasting Profile
Counterpart Brewing’s Double Barrel Vanquish is the latest expression from the Niagara Falls brewery’s celebrated Double Barrel series — a lineup that has cemented Counterpart’s reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished barrel-aging programs. In the glass it pours an impenetrable obsidian black with a thin, creamy mocha-tinted crown that dissipates slowly, leaving fine lacing on the sides. The nose is immediately arresting: waves of dark bittersweet chocolate, charred oak, dried dark fruits, espresso, and a deeply integrated bourbon warmth rise together in measured complexity. On the palate, the mouthfeel is full, viscous, and commanding — the hallmark of Counterpart’s high-gravity imperial stouts — with a balance of rich caramel sweetness, roasted grain bitterness, and the smooth vanilla and tannin character imparted by the double-barrel treatment.
Flavours of dark cherry, cocoa powder, tobacco leaf, and molasses unfold in successive layers. The finish is long, warming, and pleasantly bitter, with lingering oak and dried fruit notes that reward patience. Given the depth of structure, this release has considerable cellaring potential for those inclined to track its evolution over one to three years.
Food Pairing
Counterpart Brewing Double Barrel Vanquish pairs beautifully with a slow-braised beef short rib lacquered in a dark mole sauce — the beer’s roasted bitterness and barrel-driven sweetness mirror the chocolate and chili depth of the dish. Equally compelling alongside an aged Quebec cheddar or Comté, where the cheese’s crystalline nuttiness and salt amplify the vanilla and caramel layers of this imperial stout.
