Château l’Église Clinet — Pomerol’s Rising Star
Château l’Église Clinet stands among Pomerol’s most distinguished properties, cultivating just 6 hectares of exceptional terroir near the appellation’s famed plateau. The estate’s modern renaissance began in 1983 when Denis Durantou assumed control, transforming what was already a respected domaine into one of the Right Bank’s most sought-after addresses through meticulous viticulture and uncompromising cellar work.
Under Durantou’s stewardship, l’Église Clinet has earned international acclaim for producing powerful yet refined wines that rival Pomerol’s most celebrated names. The estate’s commitment to low yields, late harvesting, and extended élevage results in wines of remarkable concentration and ageing potential, consistently praised by critics worldwide. This single magnum from 1991 represents a snapshot of the estate during this transformative era.

Terroir & Trauben
Clay and Iron on Pomerol’s Plateau
The vineyard occupies a privileged position on deep clay soils enriched with iron oxide deposits—the geological signature that gives Pomerol its distinctive character. This heavy clay subsoil, locally known as “crasse de fer,” provides the water retention and mineral complexity that allows Merlot to achieve extraordinary depth and structure, while surface gravels ensure excellent drainage and heat retention during ripening.

Weinbereitung & Reifung
Traditional Methods, Uncompromising Standards
L’Église Clinet’s winemaking philosophy centers on harvesting at optimal phenolic ripeness and employing extended maceration periods to extract maximum structure and complexity from the estate’s old vines. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, allowing precise management of extraction while preserving the fruit’s natural character and terroir expression.
The wine is aged in French oak barrels with a significant proportion of new wood, typically 18 to 24 months, developing layers of complexity while maintaining the vibrant Merlot fruit at its core. This extended élevage allows the wine to integrate its structural components and develop the seamless texture for which the estate has become renowned.
Vintage-Charakter
1991 — An Underrated Bordeaux Year
The 1991 vintage in Bordeaux has historically been overshadowed by its more celebrated neighbors, yet producers who practiced rigorous selection crafted elegant, classically-structured wines with surprising longevity. A challenging spring frost reduced yields significantly, and those estates that weathered the difficulties harvested concentrated fruit with excellent natural acidity. On Pomerol’s clay soils, the Merlot achieved fine ripeness despite the obstacles, producing wines of refined structure rather than opulent power—an expression that has aged gracefully over three decades.
Verkostungsnotizen
Evolved Elegance in Magnum
Now fully mature, this 1991 Église Clinet reveals the tertiary complexity that distinguishes well-aged Pomerol—evolved notes of black truffle, forest floor, and dried rose petals mingle with sweet plum compote and cedar. The magnum format has preserved remarkable freshness, maintaining a silky core of red fruit beneath layers of leather, tobacco leaf, and sous-bois. The palate shows refined tannins fully integrated into a seamless texture, with subtle mineral notes and a lingering finish that speaks to the iron-rich terroir. This is classic Right Bank Bordeaux in its mature glory—nuanced, savory, and thoroughly beguiling.

Large Bordeaux bowl
This mature Pomerol deserves gentle decanting to separate any sediment and allow the evolved aromatics to blossom, though the magnum format ensures remarkable preservation of freshness. Pair with dishes that honor its savory complexity: slow-roasted duck with wild mushrooms, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or aged Comté cheese. The wine’s silky texture and tertiary notes make it an exceptional match for truffle-based preparations or game birds in reduction sauces—preparations that echo the wine’s own forest floor nuances without overwhelming its elegant, evolved character.
