Château Angélus — A Modern Right Bank Icon

Château Angélus stands as one of Saint-Émilion’s most celebrated estates, its history rooted in the de Boüard de Laforest family since 1782. The estate takes its name from the Angelus bell that once rang from the surrounding churches, calling vineyard workers to prayer. Under the visionary leadership of Hubert de Boüard and his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié, Angélus was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in the 2018 Saint-Émilion classification, cementing its position among Bordeaux’s elite properties.

The 23.4-hectare estate has become synonymous with perfectionism and innovation, combining traditional Bordelais methods with modern precision viticulture. Though the estate withdrew from the Saint-Émilion classification system in 2021, its reputation remains undiminished, producing wines of extraordinary depth and elegance that rank among the Right Bank’s finest expressions.

Terroir & Trauben

The Perfect Amphitheatre of Saint-Émilion

Angélus occupies a privileged position on the south-facing slopes at the foot of Saint-Émilion’s historic village, its vineyards forming a natural amphitheatre that captures maximum sunlight. The terroir is a complex mosaic of clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils over limestone bedrock, ideally suited to both Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This geological diversity allows each variety to find its optimal expression, with the clay retaining moisture for Merlot’s richness while the limestone provides structure and minerality.

Weinbereitung & Reifung

Präzision und Geduld

The 2018 vintage was vinified with meticulous attention to detail, with each parcel fermented separately in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats. Following alcoholic fermentation and extended maceration to extract optimal phenolic ripeness, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation before being transferred to barrel. The élévage lasted between 18 and 22 months in 100% new French oak barriques, with a portion also aged in two new foudres to add complexity and integration.

This careful oak management allows the wine’s intrinsic character to shine through while adding layers of spice, toast, and subtle vanilla notes. The combination of barriques and larger format foudres creates a harmonious balance between concentration and elegance, preserving the wine’s freshness while building structure for long-term ageing.

Vintage-Charakter

2018 — Triumph Over Adversity

The 2018 vintage in Saint-Émilion presented significant challenges that ultimately rewarded those who persevered. A wet spring brought heavy rainfall, creating conditions ripe for mildew and rot that required constant vigilance in the vineyards. However, a gloriously hot and dry summer arrived to save the vintage, clearing disease pressure and allowing the grapes to achieve exceptional phenolic ripeness. The late-season conditions were near-perfect, producing wines of remarkable concentration balanced by vibrant freshness.

Hubert de Boüard described 2018 as “sexy,” noting the vintage’s combination of depth and energy — wines with concentration but also an electric quality that awakens the palate. For Angélus specifically, 2018 represents a slightly more elegant expression than some previous great vintages, without sacrificing any intensity or ageing potential. The result is a wine that marries power with refinement in exemplary fashion.

Verkostungsnotizen

Magical Intensity Meets Refined Grace

The 2018 Angélus reveals itself as a wine of extraordinary complexity and balance, opening with a captivating bouquet of crème de cassis and blackberry compote interwoven with refined notes of graphite, toasted spice, and crushed violets. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable depth without heaviness, its concentrated dark fruit core framed by silky tannins and lifted by bright acidity. Layers of incense, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate emerge mid-palate, while the wine’s mineral backbone provides structure and definition. The finish is endless, combining power with elegance in a way that marks this as one of the vintage’s defining wines.

“Possibly one of the wines of the vintage… magical juice with a slightly more elegant style than past great vintages while not lacking depth.”
