The Distillery
Yamazaki — Japan’s Pioneering Single Malt
Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii at the confluence of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers in the Kyoto Prefecture, Yamazaki holds the distinction of being Japan’s first and oldest malt whisky distillery. Torii selected the site for its exceptional soft water and misty microclimate, conditions that would prove instrumental in shaping the distillery’s elegant, layered house character. Yamazaki has since become Suntory’s flagship operation, producing a portfolio that ranges from accessible expressions to some of the most sought-after aged single malts in the world.
The distillery is renowned for its pioneering use of mizunara oak—native Japanese oak casks that impart distinctive incense, sandalwood, and coconut notes—as well as its mastery of sherry cask maturation. A century after its founding, Yamazaki remains at the vanguard of Japanese whisky, consistently achieving top honours at international competitions and setting auction records for aged expressions.

Tasting Profile
Nose
Typical of Yamazaki’s refined house style, expect aromas of stone fruit and gentle oak, layered with delicate floral notes and a whisper of mizunara-derived sandalwood. The nose is often complex yet restrained, revealing dried apricot, honey, and subtle spice with time in the glass.
Palate
The mouthfeel is characteristically smooth and rounded, with flavours that balance ripe orchard fruit, sweet malt, and a touch of sherry-influenced richness. Oak spices emerge mid-palate—cinnamon, nutmeg—alongside traces of dark chocolate and citrus zest, building in complexity without overwhelming the fundamental elegance.
Finish
The finish is medium to long, gently drying with lingering oak tannins, a return of incense-like wood spice, and a final note of candied ginger. The aftertaste remains refined and contemplative, true to Yamazaki’s signature restraint.

A Century of Excellence
