Tasting Profile

4.5Untappd

Monkish Echo Park (2026) pours a deep, near-opaque obsidian with mahogany edges that glow when held to light, topped by a modest tan head that settles into a persistent collar with faint lacing. The nose is a brooding, layered affair: dark chocolate and espresso roast emerge first, followed by waves of dried dark fruit — black cherry, prune, and fig — alongside rich vanilla extract drawn from years in Weller wheated bourbon and Willett bourbon barrels. A subtle coconut and toasted oak undercurrent completes the aromatic picture. On the palate, the mouthfeel is full and velvety, with a density that speaks to its extended 48-to-66-month barrel maturation.

Sweetness is present but disciplined, anchored by the roasted grain backbone of the imperial stout component and the resinous malt of the barleywine. Flavors of bourbon-soaked dark fruit, molasses, dark toffee, and a whisper of leather unfold in succession. The finish is long, warming, and gently bitter, with a drying oak tannin that invites contemplation. Aging potential is considerable; bottles will reward cellaring for several additional years. Food Pairing

Monkish Echo Park 2026 — barrel-aged black barleywine of remarkable depth — pairs magnificently with a 24-month aged Comté or Gruyère, whose crystalline, nutty richness mirrors the bourbon-vanilla warmth of the beer. For a more indulgent pairing, serve alongside a dark chocolate fondant with salted caramel, where the bittersweet cocoa echoes the roasted malt and dried fruit complexity of this landmark Monkish release.
