The Estate

Château Lynch-Bages 2010 — A Fifth Growth with Second Growth Stature

Château Lynch-Bages stands among Pauillac’s most beloved estates, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification that consistently performs far above its official ranking. Indeed, critics routinely acknowledge that this property delivers wines at second-growth level, combining power with remarkable refinement. The Cazes family has stewarded the estate since 1939, transforming it into one of Bordeaux’s most reliable producers through meticulous vineyard management and modern winemaking techniques that honour traditional methods.

The 90-hectare vineyard occupies the Bages plateau south of Pauillac town, where deep gravel beds provide ideal drainage for Cabernet Sauvignon. Moreover, the estate’s name combines that of Thomas Lynch, an Irish vintner who acquired the property in the 18th century, with the hamlet of Bages. Today, under Jean-Michel Cazes and his son Jean-Charles, Lynch-Bages continues to craft opulent, age-worthy wines that showcase Pauillac’s signature cassis intensity alongside remarkable accessibility in youth.

Terroir & Grapes

The Bages Plateau — Deep Gravel Perfection

The vineyard thrives on the renowned Bages plateau, where Günzian gravel deposits reach depths of several metres over limestone subsoil. This exceptional terroir provides natural drainage while forcing vines to root deeply, thus concentrating flavours in small, thick-skinned berries. Additionally, the plateau’s gentle elevation ensures optimal sun exposure and air circulation, key factors in producing Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary ripeness and structure. The 2010 vintage benefited from an exceptionally dry growing season without temperature extremes, allowing grapes to develop thick skins rich in colour and tannin while maintaining fresh acidity.

Vinification & Ageing

Traditional Methods with Modern Precision

The winemaking team employs parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing each vineyard block to express its unique character. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes extended maceration to extract fine tannins and develop structure. Subsequently, the Grand Vin matures for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with 70% new wood carefully selected to complement rather than overwhelm the fruit. This élevage period allows the wine to integrate its components while developing complexity, yet preserves the vibrant cassis fruit that defines Lynch-Bages.

Vintage Character

2010 — A Legendary Pauillac Vintage

The 2010 vintage rivals 2009 as one of Bordeaux’s greatest recent years, though it offers a distinctly different profile. While 2009 delivered opulence and early charm, 2010 provides structure, freshness, and extraordinary longevity potential. Cool nights throughout the growing season preserved natural acidity, while the exceptionally dry conditions concentrated flavours without causing stress. Consequently, the wines display remarkable balance between power and elegance, with thick-skinned grapes yielding deep colour and abundant but refined tannins. Critics universally acclaim this vintage, and indeed, Château Lynch-Bages 2010 represents the estate’s most backward, structured wine of the decade—a modern classic built for decades of evolution.

Tasting Notes

Profound Intensity and Classical Structure

This magnum reveals stunning aromatics of crème de cassis and blackcurrant liqueur, intertwined with pencil shavings, graphite, and spring flowers. On the palate, a concentrated core of dark fruit unfolds with remarkable density, framed by firm yet powdery tannins and vibrant acidity. Furthermore, notes of loamy soil, cigar wrapper, and smoke add complexity to the wine’s profound structure. The finish extends seamlessly, showcasing both power and finesse in equal measure. This wine evokes the legendary Lynch-Bages bottlings from the 1950s through 1980s—a modern benchmark that combines classical restraint with contemporary purity of fruit.

“The most brooding, backward Lynch-Bages of the decade… won’t begin to hit its stride until age 20.”

This powerful Pauillac demands generous aeration to reveal its full complexity—decant for at least two hours before serving. The wine pairs magnificently with roasted lamb studded with garlic and herbs, grilled côte de boeuf with shallot confit, or aged Comté cheese. Moreover, game dishes such as venison with juniper berry sauce showcase the wine’s savoury depth and structured tannins. The magnum format offers particular advantages for this backward vintage, allowing slower, more graceful evolution over the coming decades while providing ample wine for special occasions shared among collectors and connoisseurs.
