The Estate
Château Léoville Las Cases — The Médoc’s Grand Seigneur
Château Léoville Las Cases stands as one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification whose wines often rival—and occasionally surpass—the First Growths. The property traces its lineage to the vast Léoville estate, which was divided in the aftermath of the French Revolution, with Las Cases emerging as the jewel of the three resulting châteaux. Under the meticulous stewardship of the Delon family since 1900, Las Cases has cultivated a reputation for uncompromising quality and remarkable ageability.
The estate’s 97 hectares of vines are situated in Saint-Julien, France, with a significant portion—the famed “Clos Léoville Las Cases”—directly bordering Château Latour in Pauillac. This privileged position on deep Günzian gravel beds allows Las Cases to produce wines of extraordinary concentration, structure, and classical Médoc character. The château is known for its rigorous selection process, often declassifying significant portions of the harvest to maintain the Grand Vin’s exacting standards.
Terroir & Grapes
Gravel Terraces of Distinction
The vineyard’s terroir is dominated by deep Quaternary gravel over clay-limestone subsoil, providing exceptional natural drainage and heat retention that allows Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve perfect phenolic maturity. The enclos adjacent to Latour benefits from the same geological formation, yielding grapes of remarkable complexity and concentration. The classic Left Bank blend emphasizes Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and longevity, supported by Merlot for roundness and completed with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Craftsmanship
Léoville Las Cases employs traditional Bordeaux vinification methods with meticulous attention to parcel selection and fermentation temperature control. Following alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, the wine undergoes malolactic conversion before beginning its élevage in French oak barrels, typically 50-100% new depending on the vintage character. The wine is aged for 18-20 months, allowing gradual integration of oak and development of the estate’s signature structure and complexity before bottling without filtration.
Vintage Character
1993 — A Year of Elegant Restraint
The 1993 vintage in Bordeaux presented significant challenges, with a cool, damp summer followed by rain during harvest, resulting in lighter yields and wines requiring careful vinification. While not celebrated as a great vintage across the region, the finest estates—particularly those in the Médoc with superior drainage—managed to produce elegant, classically-styled wines with more restraint than power. Léoville Las Cases, with its exceptional terroir and rigorous selection, crafted a wine that emphasizes finesse over weight, offering a more accessible expression of the estate’s signature style while maintaining its characteristic depth and structure.
Tasting Notes
Classical Médoc Expression
The 1993 Léoville Las Cases presents a garnet-brick hue characteristic of its three decades of evolution, releasing an elegant bouquet of cedar, graphite, dried blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, and hints of truffle. On the palate, the wine displays the refined, tertiary character of mature Cabernet-based Bordeaux—firm but integrated tannins frame flavors of dark cherry, cassis, leather, and earthy complexity. The finish shows good persistence with savory notes of forest floor and subtle spice, demonstrating the wine’s ability to develop gracefully despite the vintage’s modest reputation.

This mature Léoville Las Cases pairs beautifully with classic preparations that honor its evolved, tertiary character. Consider roasted rack of lamb with herbes de Provence, grilled côte de boeuf with bone marrow and shallot confit, or richly flavored game such as roasted venison with juniper and wild mushrooms. The wine’s savory complexity also complements aged hard cheeses—particularly Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano—and earthy dishes featuring black truffles. Decant gently to separate from sediment and allow the wine to breathe and reveal its full aromatic spectrum.
