The Estate

Château Léoville Las Cases 2018 — The Super Second

Château Léoville Las Cases stands as one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, moreover earning its reputation as a “super second” that routinely rivals First Growth quality. The property traces its origins to the vast Léoville domain, which was divided in the early 19th century following the French Revolution. Indeed, Las Cases retained the finest parcels, including the celebrated Enclos adjacent to Château Latour, thus securing its position as the jewel of Saint-Julien.

Under the stewardship of the Delon family for generations, the estate has consistently produced wines of extraordinary depth and aging potential. Terroir & Grapes

The Grand Enclos: Médoc’s Finest Gravel

The estate commands 98 hectares of vines planted on exceptional deep Günzian gravel beds that define the Médoc’s greatest terroirs. Moreover, the famous Enclos—a walled vineyard bordering Pauillac’s Château Latour—delivers the estate’s most profound fruit, consequently forming the backbone of the Grand Vin. These ancient quaternary gravels provide optimal drainage while forcing roots deep into clay-limestone subsoils, thus imparting remarkable complexity and structure to the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates the blend.

Vinification & Ageing

Precision Winemaking at Its Finest

The 2018 harvest unfolded between September 15th and October 4th, with meticulous parcel selection ensuring optimal ripeness across the estate’s varied terroirs. Indeed, yields were deliberately restrained to 35.5 hectoliters per hectare, thus concentrating flavour intensity while maintaining balance. The winemaking team employs traditional vinification in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each parcel to express its unique character before assemblage.

Following fermentation, the wine underwent élevage in 90% new French oak barriques for approximately 18 to 20 months. Moreover, this high proportion of new wood integrates seamlessly thanks to the wine’s extraordinary concentration and structure. The resulting 14.49% alcohol level reflects the vintage’s sunny warmth, yet the wine maintains remarkable freshness and precision throughout.

Vintage Character

2018 in Saint-Julien: A Collector’s Dream

The 2018 vintage proved exceptional for Saint-Julien, widely recognized as the most consistent appellation of the year across the Médoc. Indeed, after challenging wet conditions in spring, the season transformed into an ideal growing period with hot, dry weather from June through September, yet surprisingly cool nights preserved essential freshness. Consequently, the wines exhibit full-bodied concentration and power alongside elegant refinement—a stylistic marriage of 2009’s generosity and 2016’s classical structure.

Furthermore, Saint-Julien’s superior drainage allowed the gravel terroirs to manage the vintage’s fluctuations with remarkable poise. The resulting wines display higher alcohol levels than recent years, however ample natural acidity provides balance and aging potential. For Léoville Las Cases, the vintage delivered one of the estate’s most complete expressions in recent memory.

Tasting Notes

Monumental Structure, Classical Poise

This wine presents an extraordinary study in controlled power and aristocratic refinement. Moreover, dense layers of blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar unfold with surgical precision across the palate, while dry, finely grained tannins provide architectural structure worthy of decades of cellaring. Indeed, the concentration proves remarkable yet never heavy—instead, the wine’s classical proportions recall the legendary vintages that built Léoville Las Cases’s reputation. Furthermore, subtle notes of tobacco, crushed violets, and dark minerals emerge with aeration, revealing complexity that will continue developing for thirty years or more. The finish extends magnificently, combining richness with restraint in perfect equilibrium.

Patience Rewarded

Temperature

Cellaring Potential

Decanting

Glassware
Large Bordeaux balloon

This monumental wine demands extended decanting—ideally three to four hours—to begin revealing its extraordinary complexity, moreover benefiting from generous aeration in an oversized Bordeaux glass. Indeed, the wine’s formidable structure calls for equally substantial cuisine: pair with rare Wagyu beef, roasted rack of lamb with herb crust, or aged Comté cheese. Furthermore, game preparations such as venison with juniper or wild duck with cherry gastrique complement the wine’s dark fruit concentration beautifully. Collectors should exercise patience, however, as the wine’s greatest glories lie well beyond 2030.
