The Estate
Domaine Bott Frères — Guardians of Alsace Tradition
The Bott family has cultivated vines in the heart of Alsace for generations, establishing a reputation for producing honest, terroir-driven wines that express the unique character of this storied French region. Based in the commune of Ribeauvillé, one of Alsace’s most prestigious wine villages, Domaine Bott Frères works exclusively with estate-grown fruit from carefully tended parcels across the region’s finest terroirs.
Their approach combines traditional Alsatian winemaking methods with modern precision viticulture, respecting the natural expression of each grape variety. The domaine is particularly celebrated for their Pinot Gris, which captures the noble variety’s signature richness and aromatic complexity while maintaining the crystalline purity that defines great Alsace whites.
Terroir & Grapes
Alsace Terroir — Where Vosges Mountains Meet Rhine Valley
This Pinot Gris hails from the protected Alsace Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée in eastern France, where the rain shadow of the Vosges Mountains creates one of France’s driest and sunniest wine-growing climates. The vines are rooted in the region’s characteristic mosaic of limestone, granite, and clay-marl soils that lend both mineral tension and aromatic depth to the wines. Pinot Gris, known locally as Tokay before EU regulations, thrives in these conditions, developing its hallmark richness while retaining elegant acidity.
Vinification & Élevage
Traditional Alsace Methods
Following Alsatian tradition, the grapes are gently pressed and the must undergoes slow, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the variety’s delicate aromatics and natural fruit character. The wine is vinified dry or near-dry, allowing the Pinot Gris to express its full spectrum of flavours without excessive residual sugar masking the terroir. After fermentation, the wine rests on fine lees for several months, building texture and complexity before bottling in the classic tall Alsatian flûte.
Vintage Character
The 2022 Vintage in Alsace
The 2022 vintage in Alsace was marked by a warm, dry growing season that produced wines of exceptional ripeness and aromatic intensity. Early budbreak was followed by a long, sunny summer with moderate drought stress that concentrated flavours while the region’s characteristic cool nights preserved vital acidity. The harvest began in late August under ideal conditions, yielding healthy grapes with superb phenolic maturity. The resulting wines show generous fruit character balanced by crystalline freshness — Pinot Gris from this vintage displays particular richness and depth while maintaining the variety’s signature elegance.
Tasting Notes
Rich, Aromatic & Beautifully Balanced
This Pinot Gris opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe pear, white peach, and golden apple, layered with delicate notes of honeysuckle, toasted almond, and a subtle hint of smoke. On the palate, the wine reveals medium-to-full body with luxurious texture and excellent concentration, offering flavours of quince, apricot, and candied citrus peel balanced by vibrant acidity and a signature mineral spine. The finish is long and precise, with lingering notes of spice and stone fruit. This is classic Alsace Pinot Gris — generous yet refined, rich yet refreshing, expressing both the nobility of the grape and the purity of its terroir.
Service & Pairing
At Table — Versatile Gastronomy
This Pinot Gris is remarkably versatile at table, pairing beautifully with Alsatian classics such as choucroute garnie, baeckeoffe, and tarte flambée, as well as roasted poultry, pork with fruit-based sauces, and creamy mushroom dishes. Its richness and subtle smokiness make it an excellent companion to foie gras, aged Comté, or Asian cuisine with moderate spice. The wine’s balanced structure also allows it to stand alone as an elegant apéritif. Serve lightly chilled to appreciate its full aromatic complexity and textural depth.
