The Estate
Clos des Papes — A Benchmark of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Founded in 1896, Clos des Papes has remained in the hands of the Avril family for four generations, with Paul Avril and now his son Paul-Vincent continuing the estate’s uncompromising pursuit of quality. This 32-hectare domaine is revered as one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most traditional and meticulously managed properties, producing wines that consistently rank among the appellation’s finest. The Avrils farm organically (though uncertified), harvest by hand at optimal ripeness, and work with extraordinarily low yields to achieve remarkable concentration and ageability.
Clos des Papes is celebrated for its classical style: powerful yet refined, deeply structured yet elegant, with an uncanny ability to express the complexity of Châteauneuf’s terroir without resorting to over-extraction or excessive oak. The estate’s reputation has been built on consistency across vintages and a winemaking philosophy that favours balance and ageing potential over immediate gratification, making each bottle a compelling investment for the serious collector.
Terroir & Grapes
Thirteen Parcels, One Vision
The estate’s vineyards are distributed across thirteen distinct parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, capturing the appellation’s remarkable geological diversity. Soils range from the famous galets roulés (large round stones) that store heat and promote ripeness, to sandy patches, red clay, and limestone outcrops. This mosaic of terroirs allows the Avrils to craft a red blend of extraordinary complexity, drawing on the strengths of each parcel. Old vines—many planted in the 1950s and 1960s—yield concentrated fruit with natural balance and depth.
The red Clos des Papes is a traditional Châteauneuf blend dominated by Grenache, complemented by Mourvèdre, Syrah, and smaller proportions of other permitted varieties. The estate’s meticulous viticulture—rigorous green harvesting, manual sorting, and natural farming practices—ensures that only the finest fruit enters the cellar, resulting in wines that speak eloquently of their southern Rhône origins.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Methods, Impeccable Execution
Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its unique character, with fermentation taking place in traditional concrete tanks using indigenous yeasts. The Avrils favour gentle extraction through careful pump-overs and extended maceration periods, allowing the wines to develop structure and complexity without harshness. No new oak is employed—the wine is aged in large, neutral foudres and demi-muids that impart no woody flavour, preserving the purity of fruit and terroir expression that defines Clos des Papes.
The various lots are blended after approximately 18 months of élevage and bottled unfined and unfiltered, a practice that occasionally leaves sediment but ensures maximum texture and aromatic complexity. This artisanal approach results in wines that require patience but reward the collector with decades of evolution in the cellar, developing tertiary notes of leather, truffle, garrigue, and dried roses.
Vintage Character
The Brilliant 2015 Vintage
The 2015 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is widely regarded as exceptional, combining the warm, dry growing season that produces ripe, concentrated fruit with crucial diurnal temperature variation that preserved freshness and aromatic complexity. After a mild winter and early budbreak, the summer brought sustained heat without extreme spikes, allowing Grenache and Mourvèdre to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity. Harvest conditions were near-perfect, with producers able to pick at optimal phenolic maturity without concern for rain or rot.
For Clos des Papes, 2015 represents a magnificent expression of the estate’s classical style: the wine displays impressive density and structure, with velvety tannins and layers of dark fruit, yet maintains the elegance and balance that defines the domaine. This is a vintage built for long ageing, with critics predicting a drinking window extending well beyond 2040 for top examples. The 2015 offers both immediate pleasure for those who appreciate youthful power and the promise of magnificent evolution for patient collectors.
Tasting Notes
Power Meets Refinement
The 2015 Clos des Papes opens with a captivating bouquet of crushed black cherries, wild strawberries, and blackcurrants, interwoven with classic southern Rhône notes of lavender, garrigue, cracked black pepper, and a subtle hint of roasted meat. On the palate, the wine reveals extraordinary depth and concentration, with layers of ripe dark fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity that provides lift and balance. The mid-palate is dense yet elegant, showing remarkable purity of fruit alongside savoury complexity—dried herbs, olive tapenade, smoke, and graphite. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of kirsch, spice, and Mediterranean scrubland. This is a wine of profound harmony, combining the richness of a warm vintage with the structural integrity and freshness that ensure decades of graceful evolution.
