The Distillery

Hanyu — The Silent Legend of Japanese Whisky

Founded in 1941 in Saitama Prefecture, Hanyu Distillery operated for nearly six decades before closing in 2000 due to declining domestic demand for whisky. The final casks were rescued by Ichiro Akuto — grandson of the founder — who went on to establish Chichibu Distillery and release the remaining Hanyu stock under his celebrated Ichiro’s Malt brand. The distillery was demolished in 2004, making every surviving bottle a finite artefact of Japanese whisky history.

Hanyu is best known for the Playing Card Series — 54 single-cask bottlings released between 2005 and 2014, each bearing a different playing card design. A complete set sold at auction in 2020 for over USD 1.5 million, cementing Hanyu’s status as one of the most collectible ghost distilleries in the world. Independent bottlings like this LMDW release offer rare access to the distillery’s small remaining stocks, sought after by collectors for their historical significance and the impossibility of future production.

This Expression

A 15-Year Silent-Era Single Malt for La Maison du Whisky

This Hanyu bottling was distilled in 2000 — the final year of production before the distillery’s closure — and matured for 15 years before being bottled exclusively for La Maison du Whisky (LMDW) in 2015. The product name references cask 63, though full cask specifications were not disclosed at release. As with many independent Hanyu releases, the exact maturation regime remains undocumented, but the distillery was known to favour a combination of ex-bourbon hogsheads and smaller sherry casks sourced from Spain. This bottling represents a snapshot of Hanyu’s final distillation run, bottled during the peak of international interest in Japanese ghost distilleries.

Tasting Profile

Without access to verified tasting notes for this specific LMDW bottling, we defer to the documented house character of Hanyu’s single malts from the 2000 distillation year. The distillery was known for a balanced profile that married fruity malt sweetness with moderate oak influence, often showing dried fruit, honeyed grain, subtle spice, and a delicate woody tannic structure. The 15-year maturation period typically allowed sufficient cask integration without overwhelming the spirit’s inherent elegance — a hallmark of Hanyu’s lighter style compared to heavily sherried contemporaries.

Provenance & Authentication

Wines & Spirits SA sources Hanyu bottles exclusively through our network of over 50 certified suppliers, many with direct relationships to the original importers and official distributors who brought these releases to Europe. Each bottle is inspected for authenticity upon arrival and stored in our climate-controlled cellar maintained at 14°C and 70% relative humidity, with 24/7 monitoring to preserve label condition and liquid integrity. Given the explosion of counterfeit Hanyu bottles in the secondary market — particularly of Card Series and rare independent bottlings — we provide a written guarantee of authenticity with every purchase. For collector-grade bottles at this price tier, provenance is not a courtesy; it is a contractual obligation.

Collector Context

The Final Vintage of a Dismantled Icon

Hanyu 2000 bottlings occupy a unique position in the Japanese whisky market: they represent the absolute end of production from a distillery that can never produce again. While earlier Hanyu vintages from the 1980s and 1990s command extraordinary premiums at auction — particularly single casks and Card Series releases — the 2000 distillation year carries symbolic weight as the distillery’s swan song. Independent bottlings like this LMDW release are especially scarce, as Ichiro Akuto retained the majority of final-year casks for his own Ichiro’s Malt label. Secondary market prices for verified Hanyu bottles have appreciated consistently since 2015, driven by finite supply, institutional collector demand, and the distillery’s status as a cultural monument within the Japanese whisky renaissance. This is not a bottle to open lightly — but for those who do, it offers a taste of history that will never be replicated.

Rest time
10–15 min aerate

This is a contemplative whisky best reserved for quiet, attentive tastings with fellow collectors who understand its historical significance. Allow the spirit to open in the glass for at least ten minutes after pouring — ghost distillery malts of this age often reveal hidden layers of complexity with aeration. Pair with dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher) or aged Comté cheese to complement the malt’s dried fruit and oak character. Given its provenance and rarity, this bottle is as much an investment piece as it is a drinking experience; many collectors choose to acquire duplicates — one to archive sealed, one to open on a significant occasion.
