The Estate
Château Trotanoy — The Jewel of Pomerol
Château Trotanoy stands among the most celebrated estates in Pomerol, an appellation renowned for producing some of Bordeaux’s most voluptuous and age-worthy wines. The estate’s name derives from the old French “trop ennui” — “too much trouble” — a testament to the challenging clay soils that are notoriously difficult to work but yield wines of extraordinary depth and concentration. Owned by the prestigious Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix since 1953, Trotanoy has been meticulously managed for over seven decades, with Christian Moueix personally overseeing every aspect of production to maintain the estate’s legendary status.
The 7.2-hectare vineyard occupies one of Pomerol’s finest terroirs on the plateau, neighbouring the illustrious Pétrus. While Pomerol has no official classification system, Trotanoy is universally recognized as one of the appellation’s finest properties, consistently producing wines that rival and sometimes surpass many classified growths from the Left Bank. The estate’s limited production and exceptional quality have made it a coveted addition to serious cellars worldwide.
Terroir & Grapes
Blue Clay and Iron-Rich Gravel
Trotanoy’s exceptional terroir consists primarily of deep blue clay mixed with iron-rich gravel, a geological composition that provides both natural water retention and excellent drainage. This unique soil structure, combined with the estate’s position on Pomerol’s famed plateau, creates ideal conditions for Merlot, which thrives in the dense clay and produces wines of remarkable power, structure, and longevity. The vineyard’s easterly exposure and gentle slope ensure optimal sun exposure throughout the growing season, contributing to consistently ripe, concentrated fruit even in challenging vintages.
Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Mastery
Château Trotanoy employs meticulous, traditional winemaking methods that respect both the fruit and the terroir. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo rigorous selection before fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats, allowing for precise extraction and gentle handling of the precious Merlot. The estate practices extended maceration to build structure and complexity while preserving the wine’s natural elegance and silky tannins.
Following fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak typically ranging from 50% to 80% depending on the vintage character. This carefully calibrated élevage adds subtle spice notes and textural refinement without overwhelming the wine’s profound fruit expression. The result is a wine of extraordinary depth and balance, built to evolve gracefully over decades in the cellar.
Vintage Character
2015 — A Legendary Bordeaux Vintage
The 2015 vintage is widely celebrated as one of the finest in recent Bordeaux history, rivalling the legendary 2009 and 2010 vintages. The growing season was marked by ideal conditions: a warm, dry summer with just enough rainfall to prevent water stress, followed by a perfect September that allowed for unhurried ripening and optimal phenolic maturity. On Pomerol’s Right Bank, the Merlot achieved exceptional concentration and balance, with thick skins yielding deeply coloured wines of remarkable structure and aromatic intensity.
For Château Trotanoy, 2015 represents a pinnacle achievement — the perfect convergence of outstanding terroir, impeccable winemaking, and a near-perfect vintage. The wines from this year display extraordinary purity of fruit, exceptional tannic refinement, and the kind of structural backbone that promises decades of evolution. Critics and collectors alike regard 2015 as a vintage to lay down for the long term, with the potential to rival the estate’s most celebrated bottlings.
Tasting Notes
Power Meets Elegance
The 2015 Château Trotanoy reveals itself in the glass with an opaque, almost black-purple core and a deep crimson rim. The nose is profoundly complex, offering waves of ripe black cherry, cassis, and blackberry compote interwoven with notes of violets, crushed minerals, graphite, and subtle hints of truffle and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is monumental yet remarkably refined — densely concentrated with velvety layers of dark fruit, liquorice, and espresso, supported by perfectly integrated oak and a spine of firm but ultra-fine tannins. The finish extends seemingly endlessly, with extraordinary purity and precision. This is Trotanoy at its most majestic: a wine of immense power held in perfect equilibrium, built to age gracefully for 30 to 40 years or more.
Critics’ Scores

The 2015 Trotanoy has earned near-universal acclaim from the world’s most respected wine critics, with scores consistently in the mid-to-high 90s. These exceptional ratings reflect the wine’s remarkable combination of power, elegance, and ageing potential — a true benchmark for Pomerol in this outstanding vintage.
