The Estate
Château Petit-Village — Pomerol’s Hidden Jewel
Nestled in the heart of Pomerol on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, Château Petit-Village has been crafting exceptional wines since the 18th century. The estate changed hands several times before being acquired by the AXA Millésimes group in 1989, which launched an ambitious program of vineyard restructuring and cellar modernization that has elevated the property to its current status among Pomerol’s elite. The 10.5-hectare vineyard occupies a privileged position on the highest gravel plateau of the appellation, neighbouring such legendary names as Vieux Château Certan and La Conseillante.
Under the direction of winemaker Christian Seely and technical director Jean-René Matignon, Petit-Village has earned consistent critical acclaim for its rich, elegant style that balances power with remarkable finesse. This case of six bottles represents an ideal collector’s lot from one of Bordeaux’s most successful recent vintages.

Terroir & Grapes
The Pomerol Plateau
Petit-Village’s vineyard occupies one of Pomerol’s most coveted terroirs, sitting on the famous gravel plateau enriched with blue clay and iron-rich crasse de fer in the subsoil. This unique geological composition provides excellent natural drainage while the clay retains sufficient moisture to nourish the vines during dry spells, creating ideal conditions for Merlot to express its fullest potential. The vineyard’s exposition and slight elevation contribute to optimal ripening conditions and concentration.
The blend is typically dominated by Merlot, which thrives in this clay-gravel terroir, complemented by Cabernet Franc that adds structure, aromatics, and ageing potential to the wine’s hedonistic Merlot core.

Vinification & Ageing
Precision Winemaking
The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity and undergo meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is carefully managed to extract colour, tannins, and aromatic compounds with precision, while gentle pump-overs preserve the wine’s natural elegance. Each lot is vinified separately to allow the winemaking team maximum flexibility in the final blending.
Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, typically 50-60% new, sourced from the finest Allier and Tronçais cooperages. This élevage imparts subtle notes of vanilla, toast, and spice while allowing the fruit to integrate harmoniously with the oak, developing the wine’s complexity and structure without overwhelming its terroir expression.
Vintage Character
The Stellar 2019 Vintage
The 2019 vintage ranks among the finest of the modern era in Bordeaux, particularly on the Right Bank where Merlot achieved exceptional ripeness and concentration. A warm, dry growing season with ideal flowering conditions led to small berries with thick skins and low yields, resulting in wines of remarkable depth and intensity. The harvest took place under perfect conditions in late September, allowing the fruit to reach physiological maturity while retaining excellent natural acidity.
In Pomerol specifically, the 2019 vintage has produced wines with outstanding balance, combining the power and richness of warm vintages with the freshness and elegance more typical of cooler years. Critics have unanimously praised the 2019s for their immediate charm coupled with remarkable ageing potential, suggesting a long and graceful evolution in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Opulent Yet Refined
The 2019 Château Petit-Village reveals a deep, opaque ruby-purple robe that immediately signals its concentration. On the nose, the wine opens with exuberant aromas of ripe black cherry, cassis, and plum, interwoven with notes of dark chocolate, graphite, and subtle violet florals. With aeration, nuances of cedar, tobacco leaf, and sweet spice emerge, adding layers of complexity. The palate is simultaneously powerful and refined, delivering plush black fruit flavours supported by velvety tannins and vibrant acidity that provides remarkable freshness and lift. The texture is sumptuously dense yet never heavy, with excellent mid-palate concentration leading to a long, mineral-edged finish that showcases the wine’s terroir pedigree. This is classic Pomerol in its most seductive form — immediately approachable yet built for the long haul.

Large Bordeaux
While the 2019 is already drinking beautifully, decanting for one to two hours will reveal its full aromatic complexity and allow the wine to express its silky texture. The wine’s natural opulence and refined tannins make it a sublime match for roasted or grilled red meats — consider serving it alongside Wagyu beef, rack of lamb with herb crust, or duck breast with cherry reduction. Game dishes such as venison medallions or roasted pheasant also pair magnificently, as do rich, truffle-inflected preparations and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Manchego. For those willing to exercise patience, cellaring this wine for another 5–10 years will be handsomely rewarded with added tertiary complexity and even greater harmony.
