The Estate

Château Hosanna 2006 — A Premier Cru of Pomerol

Prior to 1999, this distinguished estate bore the name Château Certan Giraud, recognised since the 1950s as one of Pomerol’s premier crus. When the legendary négociant Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired the property, he renamed it Hosanna—a name that captures the spiritual devotion he brought to crafting exceptional wines on this hallowed terroir. Indeed, the estate’s transformation under Moueix stewardship has elevated it to the very pinnacle of Right Bank excellence.

The vineyard spans just 4.45 hectares atop Pomerol’s famed plateau, situated remarkably close to such illustrious neighbours as Vieux Château Certan, Certan de May, and the legendary Pétrus. Moreover, the 2006 vintage stands among Château Hosanna’s finest expressions, capturing the extraordinary potential of this precious site. Consequently, bottles from this vintage have become highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Terroir & Grapes

The Summit of Pomerol’s Plateau

Hosanna’s vineyards occupy an enviable position on the Pomerol plateau, where deep clay soils over iron-rich gravel provide the perfect foundation for Merlot cultivation. This distinctive terroir imparts remarkable density and silky texture to the wines, while also contributing extraordinary aromatic complexity. Furthermore, the clay base retains moisture during dry summers, allowing the vines to achieve optimal ripeness even in challenging conditions.

Vinification & Ageing

Precision Winemaking in the Moueix Style

The Moueix family approaches vinification with meticulous attention to detail, harvesting each parcel at optimal phenolic ripeness. Following careful hand-sorting, the grapes undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats, where the winemaking team monitors extraction with precision. Additionally, gentle cap management preserves the wine’s elegant tannic structure while maximizing aromatic complexity.

The wine then matures in French oak barrels for approximately 18 months, with a judicious proportion of new wood that enhances rather than dominates the fruit. During this élevage period, the wine develops its characteristic silky texture and layers of complexity. Meanwhile, regular racking and careful cellar management ensure the wine evolves gracefully, ultimately achieving perfect harmony between fruit, tannin, and oak.

Tasting Notes

Lush Opulence Meets Structural Elegance

The wine presents a dense plum-ruby hue in the glass, immediately captivating with its visual intensity. On the nose, lavish aromas of black cherry and blackcurrant mingle with roasted coffee, mocha, and caramel notes that speak to the wine’s careful oak integration. Furthermore, the palate reveals a lush, sensual texture with full-bodied depth and stunning purity. Fresh acidity provides wonderful lift, while ripe tannins create a firm yet refined structure. Indeed, nuanced layers of anise and spice emerge on the long, persistent finish, demonstrating remarkable complexity and balance.

“Offering lavish quantities of black cherry and black currant fruit, with stunning length and purity.”
