The Estate
Clos de l’Oratoire — Saint-Émilion Excellence
Clos de l’Oratoire traces its origins to the 18th century, when Benedictine monks established vineyards on this exceptional hillside site in Saint-Émilion. The estate takes its name from a small oratory that once stood among the vines, a testament to the spiritual connection between the clergy and viticulture in this historic appellation. Since the late 1990s, the property has undergone significant investment and modernization while respecting its traditional heritage.
Today, Clos de l’Oratoire encompasses approximately 10 hectares on Saint-Émilion’s prestigious limestone plateau and côtes, producing wines of remarkable concentration and elegance. The estate is recognized as a Grand Cru in the Saint-Émilion classification, crafting wines that balance power with finesse, reflecting the unique character of this extraordinary Right Bank terroir.
Terroir & Grapes
Limestone Plateau Precision
The vineyards of Clos de l’Oratoire occupy a privileged position on Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau and slopes, where the distinctive astéries limestone bedrock naturally regulates water supply and imparts remarkable minerality to the wines. The soil composition—a complex mix of clay-limestone over fractured rock—provides both water retention during dry periods and excellent drainage, creating ideal conditions for Merlot to achieve full phenolic ripeness while maintaining freshness and structure.
The estate’s vineyard management emphasizes low yields and meticulous canopy work to optimize fruit concentration and balance. Following Right Bank tradition, Merlot forms the foundation of the blend, supported by Cabernet Franc which thrives on the limestone soils, contributing aromatic complexity and structural backbone to the final wine.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Methods, Modern Precision
Vinification at Clos de l’Oratoire combines traditional Bordelais methods with contemporary techniques to extract optimal color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. Hand-harvested grapes undergo rigorous selection before fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, where careful extraction through pumping-over and délestage preserves fruit purity while building structure. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel to integrate the wine seamlessly with its oak élevage.
The wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barriques, with a judicious proportion of new oak that enhances complexity without overwhelming the fruit character. This patient maturation allows the wine to develop harmonious integration between fruit, tannin, and oak, resulting in a wine of elegance and aging potential characteristic of quality Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Bordeaux Triumph
The 2019 vintage stands as one of Bordeaux’s finest in recent memory, marked by near-perfect growing conditions across the Right Bank. A warm, dry summer with timely rainfall in August allowed Merlot to achieve exceptional phenolic ripeness while retaining crucial acidity and freshness. Saint-Émilion’s limestone terroirs particularly excelled, producing wines of remarkable concentration, purity, and structural elegance.
This vintage combines the power and richness of great years with unusual finesse and balance, resulting in wines that are immediately appealing yet possess excellent aging potential. The 2019s from quality estates like Clos de l’Oratoire offer collectors wines of extraordinary quality that will evolve gracefully over two decades or more.
Tasting Notes
Elegant Power, Limestone Precision
The 2019 Clos de l’Oratoire presents a deep ruby-garnet color with brilliant clarity. The nose opens with intense aromatics of blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry, layered with notes of violet, graphite, and subtle spice from oak aging. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable concentration and depth, with ripe black fruit flavors framed by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The limestone terroir expresses itself through a distinctive mineral tension and elegant structure that lifts the rich fruit, leading to a long, precise finish marked by fresh dark fruit, subtle toast, and refined chalky texture. This is a beautifully balanced Saint-Émilion that showcases both the power of the vintage and the elegance of the estate’s terroir.

This refined Saint-Émilion pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine: roasted rack of lamb with herb crust, beef Wellington, magret de canard with cherry reduction, or aged Comté cheese. The wine’s elegant structure and mineral precision also complement game preparations such as roasted venison with blackberry jus or wild mushroom risotto with truffle. Allow the wine to breathe for at least an hour before serving to fully reveal its aromatic complexity and silky texture. While already approachable, this 2019 will reward patient cellaring, developing greater tertiary complexity over the next 15–20 years.
