The Estate
Château de Beaucastel — The Perrin Dynasty
Since 1909, the Perrin family has stewarded Château de Beaucastel, transforming this historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate into one of the Southern Rhône’s most celebrated properties. Spanning 130 hectares within the appellation, Beaucastel is renowned for its commitment to organic viticulture decades before it became fashionable, and for cultivating all thirteen permitted grape varieties of the appellation with equal devotion.
The estate’s flagship “Hommage à Jacques Perrin” was created in 1989 to honour the family patriarch, representing the pinnacle of Beaucastel’s production. Crafted only in exceptional vintages from the estate’s oldest vines, this cuvée stands among the most collectible and age-worthy wines of France, rivalling the great classified growths of Bordeaux in complexity and longevity.
Terroir & Grapes
Ancient Vines on Quaternary Gravel
The Hommage à Jacques Perrin draws exclusively from Beaucastel’s most venerable parcels, planted on the iconic galets roulés—large, heat-retaining quartzite stones deposited by ancient Alpine rivers. These old vines, many approaching or exceeding 60 years of age, are cultivated biodynamically, their deep root systems extracting extraordinary concentration and mineral complexity from the Urgonian limestone subsoil beneath the famous river stones.
While Beaucastel’s classic cuvée incorporates all thirteen permitted varieties, the Hommage emphasizes the estate’s exceptional old-vine Mourvèdre and Grenache, complemented by smaller proportions of Syrah and Counoise. This composition creates a wine of remarkable structure and aromatic intensity, distinct from the more Grenache-dominant expressions typical of the appellation.

Vinification & Ageing
Traditional Methods, Minimal Intervention
The Hommage à Jacques Perrin receives Beaucastel’s most meticulous winemaking attention. Following manual harvest at optimal phenolic ripeness, each variety is vinified separately in traditional cement cuves, with extended maceration periods to extract the full aromatic and tannic potential of these ancient vines. The wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation without temperature control, respecting the estate’s biodynamic philosophy of minimal intervention.
Élevage takes place primarily in large oak foudres for 18 to 24 months, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its remarkable fruit purity and terroir expression. Unlike many modern Châteauneuf productions, Beaucastel eschews new barriques entirely, preferring neutral oak vessels that enhance texture without imposing overt wood character. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, a testament to the Perrin family’s confidence in their raw materials.
Vintage Character
2012 — A Classic, Structured Year
The 2012 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape produced wines of exceptional elegance and classical proportions, favouring estates with old vines and exceptional terroir. Following a cool spring and moderate summer, the growing season concluded with an extended, sun-filled autumn that allowed for unhurried ripening and ideal phenolic maturity. The resulting wines show brilliant freshness, well-integrated tannins, and outstanding ageing potential—qualities that shine particularly in the concentrated, old-vine expression of the Hommage.
While 2012 may lack the immediate opulence of warmer years like 2010 or 2015, connoisseurs recognize it as a vintage that rewards patience, offering wines of remarkable purity, precision, and longevity. For Beaucastel’s Hommage—a cuvée designed for decades of evolution—2012 represents an ideal vintage profile, promising graceful development over 30 years or more.
Tasting Notes
Profound Complexity, Extraordinary Depth
The 2012 Hommage à Jacques Perrin reveals a captivating aromatic tapestry of dark cherry, blackberry, and wild garrigue herbs, interwoven with notes of black olive, truffle, leather, and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable concentration and architectural precision—dense yet perfectly balanced, with layers of dark fruit, earthy minerality, and fine-grained tannins that build to an extraordinarily persistent finish. This is a wine of profound depth and haunting complexity, still in its youth but already showcasing the signature Beaucastel combination of power and elegance. With proper cellaring, it will continue to evolve and reveal new dimensions for decades to come.
