Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs
Jacques Selosse Initial is the signature cuvée of Anselme Selosse — fils Anselme having transformed the family domaine into one of Champagne’s most revered estates.
Initial draws exclusively from Grand Cru parcels across Avize, Cramant, and Oger. The ancient Campanian chalk — up to 200 meters deep — provides extraordinary minerality and elegance. Selosse’s Chardonnay vines average 30 to 45 years old. They are cultivated with biodynamic principles emphasizing soil health, biodiversity, and minimal intervention.
The chalky soils impart a distinctive saline tension and vibrant acidity. This defines the Côte des Blancs’ finest blanc de blancs.
- Grape Blend: 100% Chardonnay
- Vine Age: 30–45 years
- Villages: Avize, Cramant, Oger
Vinification
Solera-Inspired Complexity
La Cuvée Initial is vinified entirely in small oak barrels. The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and extended lees contact. This builds texture and remarkable depth.
True to its name, Initial employs a solera-style system. Each year’s harvest refreshes a perpetual reserve of older wines. Multiple vintages are blended to achieve seamless consistency and layered complexity. The wine rests on lees for at least three years before disgorgement.
Dosage is deliberately low — typically 2–3 g/L. This allows the chalk-driven minerality and oak-derived spice to speak freely. Anselme Selosse rejects industrial uniformity. His approach offers a living, evolving expression of Grand Cru terroir shaped by time and craft.
Tasting Notes
Concentrated Elegance Meets Saline Precision
Initial reveals a brilliant golden hue with persistent, creamy mousse.
The nose is immediately captivating. Ripe orchard fruit — golden apple, Williams pear — interweaves with crushed hazelnut, warm brioche, and honeyed notes from lees aging. Oak influence is seamlessly integrated, contributing gentle vanilla and baking spice.
On the palate, the wine displays remarkable density and energy. A silky, glycerin texture carries candied citrus peel, almond cream, and salted butter. Razor-sharp chalky minerality drives a long, saline finish. The mousse is fine yet substantial. The finish lingers with toasted grain and wet stone.
This is Champagne as gastronomic statement — profound, textured, intellectually engaging.
Service & Pairing
A Wine for Contemplation and Cuisine
- Temperature: 10–12°C
- Cellaring: 5–10 years+
- Glassware: White wine glass
Serve Initial slightly warmer than standard Champagne. Use a generous white wine glass to fully express its aromatic complexity.
This is a Champagne built for the table. Perfect pairings:
- Roasted turbot or Dover sole in beurre blanc
- Lobster thermidor
- Creamy risotto with porcini
- Aged Comté cheese
- Roasted chicken with morel mushrooms
- Veal sweetbreads in cream sauce
Decanting 15 minutes before service reveals deeper layers of complexity. With proper storage, Initial will evolve gracefully for a decade or more — gaining honeyed richness while retaining its mineral spine.
