The Estate
Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse 2019 — Excellence on the Limestone Heights
Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse stands among Saint-Émilion’s elite as a Premier Grand Cru Classé B, holding one of the appellation’s smallest and most prestigious vineyard holdings. Indeed, this historic estate traces its origins to the early 19th century, when the original Beauséjour property was divided between two families, creating the Duffau-Lagarrosse branch. Consequently, the château has maintained an unwavering focus on quality over quantity, crafting wines of extraordinary concentration and elegance from its exceptional terroir perched on the limestone plateau.
Moreover, the estate entered a new chapter in 2021 when the Courtin-Clarins family acquired the property in partnership with Josephine Duffau-Lagarrosse, setting a record valuation. Nevertheless, the 2019 vintage represents the culmination of the previous era under consultants Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, who elevated the wine to extraordinary heights. This collector’s case of twelve bottles offers a remarkable opportunity to acquire one of Saint-Émilion’s finest modern vintages.

Terroir & Grapes
The Limestone Plateau’s Precious Parcel
The vineyard’s exceptional location on Saint-Émilion’s western limestone plateau provides the foundation for this wine’s remarkable character. Furthermore, the estate’s compact 6.9 hectares benefit from shallow clay-limestone soils atop solid limestone bedrock, offering perfect drainage while retaining sufficient moisture. This privileged terroir, situated at elevations reaching 90 meters, allows the vines to achieve optimal ripeness while maintaining the fresh mineral tension that defines great Saint-Émilion. Additionally, the 2019 harvest took place between September 24th and October 7th, with yields carefully restricted to 45 hectoliters per hectare, ensuring maximum concentration.

Vinification & Ageing
Precision Winemaking for Maximum Expression
The winemaking team employs meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification to respect the unique character of each plot within the vineyard. Indeed, they conduct fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless-steel vats, allowing gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannin through careful pump-overs and délestage. Subsequently, the wine undergoes extended maceration to build structure while preserving the silky texture that distinguishes this estate. Moreover, only sixty percent of production achieves the quality standards required for the grand vin, with the remainder declassified.
Following malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood carefully integrated to complement rather than dominate the fruit. Additionally, the élevage period allows the wine to develop complexity while the tannins achieve remarkable refinement. This patient approach, overseen by consultants Derenoncourt and Thienpont in their final vintage, resulted in a wine of extraordinary polish and longevity.
Vintage Character
2019 — A Triumphant Right Bank Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux delivered an exceptional combination of concentration, freshness and balance that has critics celebrating it as outstanding across both banks. However, Saint-Émilion particularly excelled, producing wines with deep colours, rich fruit intensity and ripe tannins marked by wonderful saline vivacity. Indeed, Merlot achieved generous ripeness while maintaining the acidity that ensures longevity, allowing Right Bank châteaux to craft wines of intense concentration without heaviness. Furthermore, the growing season provided ideal conditions from flowering through harvest, with warm, dry weather balanced by sufficient water reserves in the limestone subsoil. Consequently, Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse 2019 represents the vintage at its finest, capturing both power and elegance in perfect harmony.
Tasting Notes
Opulent Fruit Meets Limestone Precision
The wine presents a dark ruby colour with an opaque core and violet tints that hint at its youth and concentration. Moreover, the nose reveals attractive dark berry confit interwoven with nuances of liquorice, black cherry and subtle floral notes that lift the aromatics. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable juiciness and elegance, with ripe cherry fruit complemented by fine-grained tannins that coat the mouth with silky precision. Additionally, the limestone terroir expresses itself through a distinctive salty minerality that provides tension and drive, while the finish extends for an extraordinary length. Indeed, the balance between generous fruit ripeness and refreshing acidity suggests this wine will evolve magnificently over decades.

Nevertheless, adventurous collectors may enjoy bottles now after generous decanting, which reveals the wine’s aromatic complexity and silky texture. Moreover, the wine’s combination of ripe fruit and mineral tension makes it a versatile companion for refined cuisine. Indeed, it pairs beautifully with roasted beef tenderloin, pan-seared duck breast with cherry reduction, or aged Comté cheese.
