Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii at the confluence of three rivers in the misty hills southwest of Kyoto, Yamazaki holds the distinction of being Japan’s oldest malt whisky distillery. The site was chosen for its exceptional water — soft, mineral-rich, filtered through layers of Tennozan bamboo forest — and its humid climate, which accelerates maturation in ways fundamentally different from Scotland. Torii’s ambition was to create a distinctly Japanese whisky, one that would honour European traditions while embracing local terroir and sensibility.

A century on, Yamazaki has become synonymous with Japanese whisky at its most refined. The distillery operates a diverse array of still shapes and sizes, ferments in both wooden and stainless washbacks, and matures spirit in American oak, Spanish sherry casks, and the rare Mizunara (Japanese oak), which imparts a signature sandalwood and incense character to aged expressions. International acclaim arrived emphatically in 2003 when Jim Murray named the Yamazaki 12 Year the best whisky in the world, and again in 2015 when the Sherry Cask 2013 claimed World Whisky of the Year.
