Yamazaki — Japan’s First and Foremost Single Malt Distillery
Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii on the outskirts of Kyoto, Yamazaki holds the distinction of being Japan’s oldest malt whisky distillery. Situated where the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers converge, the distillery benefits from exceptional water quality drawn from the pure subterranean springs of the Tennozan mountain range. Torii’s vision was to create a distinctly Japanese whisky that reflected the delicate sensibilities of Japanese palate and culture, while respecting the technical traditions of Scottish distillation.
Today operated by Suntory, Yamazaki has achieved global recognition for its elegant, fruit-forward single malts that showcase meticulous cask selection and blending expertise. The distillery is particularly renowned for its pioneering use of Mizunara oak — native Japanese oak that imparts unique sandalwood and incense notes to aged expressions. Yamazaki’s reputation crystallised internationally when the Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 was named World Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2015, igniting unprecedented global demand for Japanese single malt.

A Vintage-Designated Bourbon Cask Maturation
The Yamazaki 2013 Bourbon Barrel represents a focused exploration of American oak influence on Yamazaki’s house distillate. Distilled in 2013 and matured exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels, this expression showcases the interaction between Yamazaki’s signature fruity, floral new-make spirit and the vanilla, caramel, and coconut characteristics imparted by first-fill bourbon casks. This vintage-designated bottling offers collectors and enthusiasts a snapshot of a specific production year, with the lighter oak treatment allowing the distillery character to remain prominent. Such single-vintage, single-cask-type releases from Yamazaki have become increasingly sought after as the distillery allocates more stock to age-statement and blended expressions.
Profil de dégustation
Typical of Yamazaki’s bourbon-cask matured style, expect bright orchard fruits — green apple, pear, and ripe peach — alongside vanilla custard and delicate honey notes. A gentle floral lift reminiscent of white blossoms underpins the aromatic profile, with subtle hints of butterscotch and toasted coconut from the American oak.
Soft and approachable in texture, the palate reveals layered sweetness: caramelised banana, golden syrup, and candied citrus peel balanced by a thread of gentle oak spice. The bourbon cask imparts creamy vanilla and light toffee without overwhelming the distillery’s characteristic fruit-forward elegance, maintaining harmony between wood influence and distillate character.
Medium length with lingering sweetness, gentle oak tannins, and a delicate warming spice. The finish is clean and refined, fading gracefully with echoes of honeyed barley and a faint whisper of cinnamon.

The Post-2015 Japanese Whisky Allocation Era
Following the global recognition of Japanese whisky in the mid-2010s — particularly after Jim Murray’s 2015 award to Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 — Suntory faced unprecedented stock shortages that reshaped the entire market. The distillery subsequently discontinued several age-statement releases and shifted focus toward limited-edition, vintage-designated, and single-cask bottlings to manage dwindling mature inventory. Vintage-dated Yamazaki releases from this period now represent significant collector interest, as they document a transitional era in the distillery’s output strategy. The 2013 vintage carries additional resonance as it shares its year with the Sherry Cask bottling that transformed global perception of Japanese whisky overnight. While bourbon-cask matured Yamazakis receive less attention than their sherry-cask siblings, informed collectors recognize them as purer expressions of the distillery’s foundational character, with values appreciating steadily in European and Asian auction houses over the past five years.
Service et plaisir
Serve this Yamazaki neat at room temperature to fully appreciate the delicate interplay between fruit-forward distillate and bourbon-cask influence. The approachable elegance makes it an excellent choice for comparative tastings alongside other Japanese single malts or for contemplative evening sipping. Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, caramelised nuts, or delicate Japanese sweets such as dorayaki (red bean pancakes), where the whisky’s honeyed sweetness complements without overwhelming subtle confectionery flavours.
