Château Lynch-Bages — The People’s First Growth
Château Lynch-Bages has earned its reputation as one of Bordeaux’s most beloved estates, often called “the people’s first growth” for its consistent excellence and approachable character. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, this Pauillac property has been owned by the Cazes family since 1939, and under their stewardship has regularly produced wines that rival far more expensive neighbours. The estate takes its name from Thomas Lynch, an Irish merchant who acquired the property in the 18th century, and “Bages,” the hamlet where the vineyard sits on the Bages plateau.
The 100-hectare vineyard occupies prime real estate in Pauillac, neighbouring prestigious First Growths, and benefits from meticulous viticulture overseen by the late Jean-Michel Cazes and now his son Jean-Charles. Lynch-Bages is renowned for producing powerful, opulent wines with exceptional aging potential, combining Pauillac’s signature Cabernet Sauvignon structure with generosity and richness that make them both critically acclaimed and genuinely pleasurable to drink.

Terroir et raisins
The Bages Plateau: Gunzian Gravel over Limestone
Lynch-Bages’ vineyards are planted on the renowned Bages plateau south of Pauillac town, where deep beds of Gunzian gravel provide excellent drainage and heat retention—ideal conditions for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir shares geological similarities with the finest sites in the appellation, with gravel topsoil over a limestone and clay subsoil that forces vines to root deeply, concentrating flavours and ensuring balanced ripeness even in challenging vintages.
The vineyard is planted to a classic Pauillac blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot for mid-palate richness and Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for aromatic complexity. Vines average around 30 years of age, with some parcels dating back over 50 years, contributing depth and concentration to the final wine.

Vinification et vieillissement
Traditional Methods with Modern Precision
Lynch-Bages follows a traditional Médoc vinification approach, with temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats allowing precise extraction of colour, tannin, and flavour from each parcel. Fermentation typically lasts 15-20 days with regular pump-overs and délestage to ensure gentle but thorough extraction, respecting the character of each grape variety and individual plot.
The wine is aged for 15-18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 75% new oak, imparting subtle vanilla, toast, and spice notes while allowing the wine’s fruit concentration to shine through. The élevage in Lynch-Bages’ temperature-controlled cellars allows for gradual polymerization of tannins, resulting in the supple, velvety texture for which the estate is celebrated.
Caractère vintage
2010 — A Legendary Bordeaux Vintage
The 2010 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest in Bordeaux’s modern history, rivalling 2009 and frequently compared to legendary years like 1982, 1990, and 2000. The growing season featured a cool, wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer with crucial diurnal temperature variations in September that preserved acidity while allowing phenolic ripeness. These near-perfect conditions produced wines of exceptional concentration, structure, and aging potential across both Left and Right Banks.
In Pauillac specifically, 2010 delivered Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary quality—deeply coloured, intensely aromatic, with ripe but firm tannins and brilliant freshness. Lynch-Bages’ 2010 captures everything exceptional about this vintage: power combined with elegance, concentration balanced by precision, and the structure to age gracefully for decades. This is a wine that showcases both the estate’s terroir and the vintage’s magnificence.
Notes de dégustation
Power, Purity, and Profound Complexity
Lynch-Bages 2010 presents an opaque, almost black core with a vibrant purple rim—a visual testament to its concentration. The nose is profoundly complex, offering layer upon layer of blackcurrant, blackberry, and crushed violets, interwoven with cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and subtle hints of crème de cassis. As the wine opens, notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and sweet baking spices emerge, along with that signature Pauillac cigar box character. On the palate, this is a wine of monumental structure yet remarkable refinement—densely packed with ripe black fruits, supported by fine-grained, perfectly integrated tannins and brilliant acidity that provides lift and energy. The finish is extraordinarily long, revealing layers of mineral complexity, dark fruit concentration, and elegant oak influence that seem to evolve endlessly in the glass.
“This is a profound Lynch-Bages that combines the estate’s hallmark generosity with the vintage’s exceptional structure and aging potential—a wine built for decades of evolution.”
