Château La Mission Haut-Brion — The Sacred Twin of Pessac-Léognan
Founded in the 17th century by the Lazarist Mission of Saint Vincent de Paul, Château La Mission Haut-Brion has stood as the spiritual and viticultural twin to its illustrious neighbour, Château Haut-Brion, since 1983 when both estates united under the Dillon family’s stewardship. Located in Talence, directly across the railway line from Haut-Brion, La Mission has forged its own legendary reputation for producing some of Bordeaux’s most profound and age-worthy red wines. The estate’s 29 hectares of meticulously tended vineyards have consistently delivered wines of remarkable concentration, structure, and complexity.
While La Mission Haut-Brion was not included in the 1855 Classification, it is universally regarded as performing at First Growth level, often rivalling and occasionally surpassing its classified neighbour. The estate’s reputation soared particularly in the latter half of the 20th century under the Woltner family’s direction, establishing a track record of excellence that continues today under Jean-Philippe Delmas’s technical direction.
Terroir et raisins
Graves Gunzian Gravel on Clay
La Mission Haut-Brion’s vineyards sit on the celebrated gravelly ridges of Pessac-Léognan within the Graves appellation, where deep beds of Günz gravel from the Pyrenees overlie clay and iron-rich subsoils. This unique terroir, warmer and earlier-ripening than the Médoc, produces wines of distinctive power and minerality. The estate’s plantings favour Merlot more heavily than Haut-Brion itself, typically comprising around 45% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, though proportions vary by vintage based on parcel selection.

Vinification et vieillissement
Traditional Bordeaux Craftsmanship
La Mission Haut-Brion employs traditional Bordeaux vinification methods with rigorous parcel-by-parcel selection and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve its individual character before the final assemblage is determined after extensive tasting. The wine is aged in French oak barriques, typically 50-80% new depending on vintage quality, for 18-22 months in the estate’s historic cellars.
The estate’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes terroir expression over technical manipulation, with minimal intervention during élevage. Regular racking and light fining before bottling ensure the wine’s structural integrity and longevity without stripping away the complex layers that make La Mission one of Bordeaux’s most compelling expressions.
Caractère vintage
1992 — A Challenging but Worthy Vintage
The 1992 vintage in Bordeaux proved challenging due to a cool, wet growing season that required meticulous vineyard management and strict selection at harvest. While many estates struggled, the Graves properties—particularly La Mission Haut-Brion with its earlier-ripening terroir and higher Merlot proportion—fared better than the Médoc. The wines show a more restrained, classical profile with moderate alcohol levels and refined tannins, characteristic of cooler vintages that emphasize elegance over power.
Now over three decades old, the 1992 La Mission has developed the mature, tertiary aromatics that define aged Bordeaux at its finest—earthy complexity, tobacco, cedar, and dried fruit nuances. This vintage represents an accessible entry point to experience the estate’s signature style in fully mature form, offering immediate drinking pleasure with the structure to hold for several more years.
Notes de dégustation
Mature Bordeaux Elegance
The 1992 La Mission Haut-Brion presents a beautifully evolved garnet-brick colour with an amber rim, signaling its full maturity. The nose reveals classic tertiary aromas of forest floor, dried tobacco leaf, cedarwood, and leather, interwoven with subtle notes of dried cherry, cassis, and a distinctive graphite minerality characteristic of Pessac-Léognan’s gravel terroir. On the palate, the wine shows refined structure with silky, resolved tannins, medium body, and a graceful, elongated finish marked by earthy complexity and dried herb notes. While less concentrated than exceptional vintages, this wine exemplifies the elegant, savoury profile of mature Graves at its most harmonious, offering immediate pleasure with no need for further cellaring.

Grand bol bordeaux
Decant gently to separate any sediment and allow the wine’s mature aromatics to fully express themselves. This elegant, evolved Bordeaux pairs beautifully with classic French preparations: roasted game birds such as duck or pheasant, herb-crusted rack of lamb, beef Wellington, or wild mushroom risotto. The wine’s savoury, earthy character also complements aged Comté or mature Époisses cheese. Serve slightly below room temperature to preserve its delicate balance and allow the tertiary complexities to unfold gradually in the glass.
