Karuizawa — The Silent Legend of Nagano
Founded in 1955 at 850 metres elevation in the resort town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, this distillery produced exclusively single malt whisky using Golden Promise barley imported from Scotland and matured in small sherry casks sourced from Spain. The cool highland climate and pure mountain water created whisky of exceptional concentration and elegance. Production ceased in 2000, and the distillery was fully dismantled by 2016, rendering every remaining bottle a finite artefact of Japanese whisky history.
Karuizawa has achieved near-mythical status among collectors worldwide. The distillery’s output was always modest — fewer than 150,000 bottles annually at peak — and much of the mature stock was destroyed or lost during the closure period. Auction houses regularly record record-breaking prices for single cask bottlings, with the Noh and Geisha label series commanding particular attention. What remains in private collections and specialist inventories represents the final chapter of one of Japan’s most revered whisky producers.

A Thirteen-Year Statement from the Final Era
Distilled in 2000 — the year Karuizawa ceased production — and bottled in 2013, this expression represents spirit laid down during the distillery’s final operational months. The thirteen-year maturation period bridged the silent years, allowing the whisky to develop in cask long after the stills had gone cold. Bottled as part of the ongoing effort to release remaining stocks before they vanished entirely, this 700ml bottling carries the unmistakable Karuizawa signature of sherry-driven intensity shaped by alpine maturation conditions.

Profil de dégustation
Nez
Classic Karuizawa sherry influence dominates — expect deep notes of oloroso cask, dark chocolate, and dried stone fruit typical of the distillery’s house character. The alpine maturation often contributes a crystalline clarity beneath the richness, with subtle spice and resinous wood polish emerging as the glass opens.
Le palais
Dense and concentrated, characteristic of small-cask maturation in cool conditions. The distillery’s signature emerges in waves of bitter orange marmalade, espresso grounds, and dark cherry, framed by structured tannin and a hint of sandalwood. Thirteen years in cask provides integration without over-extraction, maintaining the intensity Karuizawa is known for.
Finition
Long, warming, and elegantly dry. The sherry cask influence lingers with tobacco leaf and walnut skin, underscored by faint minerality from the high-altitude water source. A whisper of old leather and turned earth marks the final fade — the unmistakable fingerprint of Karuizawa’s silent years.
Provenance et authentification
Wines & Spirits SA sources Karuizawa expressions exclusively through a curated network of over 50 certified suppliers with direct distillery or official importer provenance. Every bottle entering our inventory undergoes authentication verification and is stored in our climate-controlled facility maintained at 14°C and 70% relative humidity, monitored continuously to preserve condition. Given the rarity and collector value of ghost distillery releases — particularly from Karuizawa’s final distillation year — we provide full documentation of provenance and guarantee authenticity on every transaction. For bottles at this price tier, trust in sourcing is not negotiable, and our reputation with informed collectors depends on it.
Contexte du collecteur
The 2000 distillation vintage holds particular significance as the final year of Karuizawa production. Spirit from this vintage appears sporadically in independent bottlings and official releases, but available stocks diminish annually. Auction records from Bonhams, Sotheby’s, and specialist Japanese whisky sales show consistent appreciation for thirteen-to-fifteen-year Karuizawa bottlings from the 2000 vintage, with provenance and condition determining final hammer prices. As with all closed distilleries, rarity is absolute — no new stock will ever enter the market. For collectors building a vertical representation of Japanese whisky history or focusing specifically on ghost distillery documentation, a bottle from Karuizawa’s closing year represents both historical significance and long-term investment stability.

Karuizawa demands patience and contemplation. Pour a modest measure into a tulip-shaped glass and allow the whisky to rest undisturbed for at least eight minutes — the aromatic evolution from closed to fully opened glass is part of the experience. This is an evening whisky, best enjoyed in quiet company or solitary reflection, paired if at all with dark chocolate above 75% cacao or aged Manchego. Given the bottle’s rarity and value, consider reserving it for milestone occasions or vertical tastings where its historical significance can be properly contextualised alongside other Japanese single malts.
