The Distillery

Karuizawa

Karuizawa Distillery was founded in 1955 by Mercian Corporation, nestled at the foot of Mount Asama in the cool highlands of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Operating at altitude with a naturally cold and humid microclimate, the distillery produced small quantities of single malt whisky using traditional methods, frequently employing imported barley malted in Scotland and prized Spanish sherry butts for maturation. Its house style became legendary for extraordinary richness, deep fruit, earthy tobacco, and a layered complexity rarely encountered in Japanese whisky. Production ceased in 2000, and the distillery was permanently closed and dismantled by 2011. The remaining casks — a finite and dwindling inventory — have since been released in highly limited single-cask bottlings, cementing Karuizawa’s status as one of the most revered and collectible names in the global whisky world.

This Expression

Cask #8309 is a single sherry butt distilled at Karuizawa in 1981 and bottled on 12 September 2011 exclusively for La Maison du Whisky, one of the world’s foremost specialist whisky importers. Yielding just 253 bottles at a cask-strength 57.0% ABV, this release represents approximately 30 years of uninterrupted maturation in a single sherry butt — a format synonymous with Karuizawa’s most celebrated expressions. The combination of a pre-closure 1981 vintage, a full sherry butt, and a single-importer bottling makes this one of the rarest configurations the distillery produced, treasured by collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Tasting Profile

The colour is a deep mahogany with auburn highlights, consistent with decades of sherry butt maturation. On the nose, this is an immediately compelling and powerful Karuizawa: high-quality sherry leads the way, accompanied by an opulent wave of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry jam, sweet hay, chestnuts, and suede. A bewitching quality emerges over time, with cocoa bean and blueberries woven through noble woody tones. On the palate, the delivery is rich and full — a classic sherry-driven structure underpinned by plum butter, sweet preserves, cloves, black pepper, tobacco, leather, and bark. The alcohol is impressively well-integrated at cask strength. Notes described by the bottler include a fine, racy character with blood orange and cardamom spice. The finish is very long, with tobacco and exotic woods lingering into a dry, delicately spiced close. Note: tasting impressions draw from verified Whiskybase community notes and the La Maison du Whisky bottler comment for this specific cask.

Provenance & Authentication

Wines & Spirits SA sources this bottling directly from certified and reputable specialist suppliers, ensuring an unbroken chain of custody from release to cellar. Every bottle is stored in a climate-controlled facility in Eclepens, Switzerland, maintained at 14°C and 70% humidity. For rare Japanese whisky of this calibre — a closed-distillery single cask released in just 253 bottles — rigorous authenticity verification and proper storage conditions are not optional; they are fundamental to preserving both the whisky’s integrity and its long-term value.

Collector Context

Karuizawa casks from the 1981 vintage represent some of the most sought-after Japanese whisky ever bottled. The distillery is permanently closed, making every remaining bottle a truly finite artefact. Cask #8309, released exclusively for La Maison du Whisky in a run of just 253 bottles, combines vintage rarity with a prestigious single-importer provenance — a pairing that commands sustained attention on the secondary market. Average valuations tracked on Whiskybase reflect the extraordinary demand for verified 1981-vintage single casks. Documented provenance, undamaged capsule, and correct storage history are critical factors that determine both authenticity and realised value for a bottle of this stature.

Food Pairing

Serve the Karuizawa 1981 cask 8309 neat in a tulip-shaped nosing glass, allowing at least ten minutes of rest after pouring to let the 57.0% ABV open fully. A small addition of still water is optional and may reveal further fruit depth. Pair with a square of Venezuelan dark chocolate (72% cacao) or aged Comté, whose nutty and savoury profile harmonises with the whisky’s tobacco, leather, and dried-fruit complexity.
